Looking for a home in McCrae?

"Coastal Bliss"

When we bought our modest little shack back in 2004 we were told by the agent McCrae has been referred to as a 'poor man's Sorrento'. What a laugh! We love living here... high on the hill it's quiet yet close enough for a trot down to McCrae plaza, the village or beach via underpass as well as golf course and tracks to Arthurs Seat and beyond. Gracing the streets are lovely kept homes and gardens - a mixed lot with quaint originals like ours, variety of more modern designs and small to large mansions. Big views, postcard views or no views, prices do reflect on this aspect. We doubled our money within five years and feel very confident with our investment into the area.

Hi Paula
Your spot sounds great. Would you recommend for a family with 2 small children ? Is the base of the state park a good place to live ?

"Cute shops and nearby beach with yacht club"

McCrae has cute shops and the nearby beach with yacht club. There are great restaurants as well as the nearby shopping centre. The area is very tightly held and highly underrated.

tightly held? not anymore. Listings aplenty and more stock coming to market every week. Land Tax is doing it's job.

Rentals in McCrae

"We made the sea change"

Moved to McCrae almost a year ago and so far very pleased with the area. It may not have huge shopping areas or schools but the non-beach side of the freeway is great as most of the houses are holiday houses and therefore little traffic in area and noise. Avoid buying on Bayview Road as it is a busy road and also runs along the freeway. The Rosebud Plaza is only 5 mins drive so there is access to shopping. Depending on where you buy in McCrae you will only be a few mins drive from the beach. Also having the McCrae Plaza is helpful for supermarket trips. As a youngish couple moving to the area we find it pleasant to live in. Had my 13 year old sister stay over Christmas and she loves the area.

"Not much to offer"

Unfortunately I would have to agree with some of the other reveiwers. McCrae is definitely overpriced - even now that prices have dropped, houses are still overpriced considering what you get. The properties that do offer great views are too far to walk to the beach and units/townhouses are way too much. You may as well purchase in Rosebud if you want a unit - you will pay $100000 less and at least there is more shopping and accessibility to the beach. If you're willing to spend that much on a house with views, you're better off investing in Rye or St Andrews beach as properties will continue to perform better the closer they are to Sorrento & walking distance to the beach.

"Nature - Views and great Beaches"

We bought right against the State park - a very sloping block but this means panoramic views that can not be build out. Mc Crae still has all the trees - so all I see are the trees, skye and the Bay which in most cases will be North facing. My 3 daughters are members of the Mc Crae Yacht Club -just the best ever - and the beach / save swimming is excellent. Behind us are great walking tracks that brings you right to Arthurs Seat.
Mc Crae has a great little shopping area - and fantastic cafe's - eg Trims, The Pavillion, Heronswood and the best Thai restaurant on the Peninsula - The Light House Cafe.
When you do buy however try not to get to close to the Freeway - noise can be bad. But I have been told they will erect sound barriers - Mc Crae is pricy but according the valuers - it is the place to be with up to 30% capital growth in 2 years. I paid $800,000 4 years ago - just been valued by Westpac at 1.2 Mill. Agent are talking round 1.5 Mill - So great place to live and a very nice nest -egg.

"Overpriced!"

I bought here 4 years ago on the premise that it was a wonderful area to reside in. I paid substantial monies for my home. It appears that I will now stand to lose some $200,000 on my home as it has depreciated in value over the years. I would like to warn potential purchasers to not invest in this area - do not purchase a townhouse or unit as you will be paying too much!

House prices have gone down everywhere!

House prices have actually increased $130,000 last year. The area is definitely a good investment with substantial growth.

"Too far!"

Looks lovely but no a great place to live. It is too far from the beach, shops and overall amenities. Whilst people boast about the views, they are distant views. We've just sold our house and it has depreciated since we bought 2 years ago. Invest your money elsewhere on the peninsula such as sorrento or St. Andrews beach.

"Love it!!!"

From an 8 year old. Great views, nice bird life and animals, very quiet, great dog park. Great secret spots to be discovered. Nice beach. Great to watch the storms and sunsets.

From the parents; Moved from Tootgarook to McCrae about 8 months ago. Have always driven through MCcrae but not really ventured up the hill over the freeway. It is stunning. The views are amazing, awesome sunsets and storms, lots of possums, parrots, rosellas, kookaburras.Outlook is mostly over tree tops to the water which is beautiful. Away from the Xmas crowds, with easy access to the beach and no so crowded. Feels extremely safe, great walking around the streets. I would say to anybody thinking of buying here, don't hesitate you will love it.

"A nice place to be, secret spots that we don't want people to know about hee hee!"

We have lived here on the McCrae slopes for four years and have two young boys. It is quiet, safe, full of bird life, a few minutes walk from the huge Arthur Seat State Park and Carrington Park Golf Course, fifteen minutes stroll to the beach. If you like the beach, plenty of recreational activities and a relaxed lifestyle, this is the place to be! Our house has almost doubled in value since we purchased it! Not a bad investment return after four years... McCrae? McLoving it!
