"Sydney madness to peaceful Wollongong"

Recently moved from Sydney to buy my first house yay...Believe it or not the travel from Western Sydney to city is the same comute from Wollongong to city and it's double the distance.Mt Pleasant is nestled amongst the escarpment and only a short drive to the beach.

As a minority, I cant walk the escarpment as well as the local athletes. I think there should be provisions for minorities who need the extra support and help to enjoy feeling inclusive. Cable cars will make us feel less vulnerable.

"Unbiased Review"

Mt. Pleasant is a meh of a suburb. Better than some places, and surely worse than others.

This review is unbiased opinion and not from some random folk supporting their place of residence.

I give this place an unbiased 1 star because:

- It's clearly overgrown and a majority of the homes were built in the 1970s and are therefore past their prime years. I wouldn't consider building in this suburb either because of the bloody awful slopes and dips which are an absolute nightmare disaster for any construction project.

- Trees, trees, trees and protected trees. Not only are councils incredibly fussy with removing natives, the massive trees in this part of the world also uproot plumbing and cause pipe blockages, not to mention are flammable and attract termites which eat your timber house structure to shreds.

- Ocean views are best enjoyed by the ocean and not from afar. You miss the ocean sounds from this location in replacement for sounds from 10 gear trucks braking down the mountain. I'd hate to know how much carcinogenic diesel particles have embedded themselves into the soil over the years. I wouldn't grow a fruit tree or a vegetable here or allow my kids to play with the contaminated soil.

- Rain flows down the mountain slopes and Mt. Pleasant is first to receive the brunt. Water runs down the sloped driveways and into garages if the door doesn't seal properly. Who wants that?

- Living here requires a vehicle or athlete leg muscles unlike more convenient locations in the Illawarra where decent shopping is less than 5 min walk away.

- Visually, I seldom hear visitors breaking their neck to visit Mount Pleasant when visiting Wollongong. Usually they opt for the Botanic Gardens, Wollongong Beach, the light house or somewhere closer to actual food. The WCC seem to invest most of the money elsewhere and probably for a reason? But again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some enjoy steep slopes, big gums and associated miniature wildlife.

My recommendation is to compare this place to others which do not have the listed problems above.

Ultimately you choose and decide where you would like to live. For me, there's too much wrong with this place to invest any money.

"Acquired Taste"

I’ve lived in enough places to be able to perform a decent and experienced comparison to Mount Pleasant from personal experience. My opinion is as follows:

While the area boasts some natural scenery, it is not at all what I would consider a prime location. For prime locations, look to higher value apartments and land value totalling over $1.8 million (sometimes house excluded) at Thirroul, Austinmer, Cliff Rd in Wollongong and seaside sections of Bulli.

The mountains and dense vegetation generally shadow homes enough to create mildew and mould production through the walls and wall cavity spaces. Don’t say “this doesn’t happen” because Mt. Pleasant provides the exact conditions for mould propagation: humidity, dampness and deprivation from sunlight.

For the elderly, there are no immediately close shopping centres or stores unlike Fairy Meadow, Balgownie, Wollongong, Thirroul and Wonoona - to name a few - where they must therefore rely on two or so hourly busses for public transport to carry an abysmal amount of groceries.

Lastly, the homes as you may notice have odd driveways which dip or conversely are situated on a private hill. Building on such topography requires experience and unnecessary costs which can be better spent on the materials if built elsewhere.

If your car has a good handbrake and you enjoy properties which are not level for the most part - you may revel in this suburb.

is a lovely quiet and family friendly suburb located just off the Princes Hwy in the Sutherland Shire. It is bordered by Sylvania, Kirrawee and Oyster Bay and a lot of the homes have lovely water views or bush views. The shopping centre has been recently renovated and has everything you need, including cafe's and takeaway and a couple of restaurants. The local primary school is one of the best in the area. Many of the houses are currently undergoing renovations as the original owners have sold and downsized and new families have moved in. Most of the homes are very large, with some great architecture on display.
