"Becoming bogan / yuppie and increasing crime"

Have lived in Mount Stuart with my family for 15 years, attended Friends School which was a brainwashing hellhole. Our street has become crime ridden due to a select few neighbours constantly feeling the need to renovate and bring the absolute scum of Hobart tradesman high on drugs in to the area. Owning anything luxury here is becoming scary, especially since I own a luxury Italian car and am in constant fear that I’ll be the next target due to the selfish select of morons who have nothing better to do but wake people up at 6am bringing stupid tradesman around banging and doing inane, hideous renovations and extensions to already beautiful homes. These renovations can go on for a prolonged unnecessary amount of time, And I mean at LEAST for a year, if not longer. Used to be lovely and quiet, but not anymore. Have security cameras set up all around our property with upgraded wifi for stronger signal due to safety concerns. Just a few weeks ago a tradesman in a Ute set fire to an elderly neighbours garage down the street, destroying all their honey that they worked so hard for, ruined by a parasite, most likely brought on my the disgusting tradies and bogans these selfish individuals keep bringing to our street and suburb with their moronic inane renovations non stop.

It’s safer than other suburbs, but it’s definitely getting worse and a trend of an attempted house robbery, car theft or fire in our street and surrounding streets has been happening at the beginning or end of every month like clockwork for the last six months. Can’t fault the few lovely people and couple couple who live on our street and our next door neighbours though, they’re lovely and always willing to keep and eye on things when we’re away and we do the same for them. You’ll likely meet a select few who try to bring a community vibe and make you feel safe, the rest, yuppies with too much time on their hands.

Security is a must here, and please, when renovations arise, complain and don’t be afraid about taking legal action, you’ll find these select few put their tale between their legs once confronted with aggressive lawyers.

"Mount Stuart - by someone who actually lives there"

Small bear - you obviously have problems and none of them relate to living in the beautiful suburb of Mount Stuart. My wife and I have lived in Mount Stuart for over 10 years and our children attend the wonderful local Primary School. We have never had a problem with barking dogs (nor has anyone we know who lives here), or chainsaws for that matter, and we live in the middle of the suburb. We are surrounded by lovely neighbours. There is a wonderful sense of community and this suburb offers so much. Beautiful views and peaceful streets - yet the city and all it offers is so close at hand. It is a safe and peaceful suburb, a great place to raise a family. We have met none of the pretentious people you speak of, none at all, in fact one of the things that we love most about living in Mount Stuart is the people who live there. As for your judgemental comments about 'bogans' maybe it says more about you and the type of person you are than this wonderful suburb and the people who live here. Mount Stuart is a hidden gem in Hobart, a beautiful spot, your comments are so bitter I don't think you would be happy anywhere.

Great for

  • Great local school, great community
  • Quiet, convenient and friendly
  • Sunny with beautiful views

"Beaneath the Suburban Facade"

It's really hard to write this review, because I have grown to dislike the place so much.

Is it just the middle-class pretensions of the area, the thin veneer over the deep and immoveable boganry? No, I can deal with that. The whole country is pretentious, we're known for it, read a wine label and you'll understand.

It's so much more than that, it's the actual raw experience, day to day, of living here. I spend a lot of time in the house and am subjected to the neglect of people's dogs, the roar and squeal of their chainsaws, the constant desire to bang something, anything, with a hammer. My wife and I are both musicians and we are the most quiet people in the street. It's that bad. And, speaking of quiet and streets, even if you find one, and ours is one of the best, you can hear the dogs up the hill and as far away as Lenah Valley.

It's a Two Chainsaw Tasmanian hell-hole and I am hoping we can move sideways to West Hobart, meet a few normal people and have a little peace and quiet. But living here kind of crushes hope. You can see it in the downcast eyes of people on the street, sitting in their cars, their gardens and on the bus. Everyone hates it, but no-one wants it to change. People won't look you in the eye, they're untrusting and untrustworthy. It's ostensibly suburban, but I don't feel safe here, there's no community spirit.

I've been honest in my ratings. You can't get a doctor here, there are no shops, no night-life, no culture. If you use Mount Stuart as a base, then maybe you can venture out to Hobart for your culture, but you'll always be escaping, and always in denial (although the DSO do perform at the Friend's School occasionally). You don't want to come back and you know it. Every second suburbanite here is a tradesman, think about that for a moment. If the rest have two chainsaws and use them as often as possible, if the rest have barking dogs that go all day, imagine what it's like to be surrounded by tradesmen. When I say bogans and pretension, I mean bogans and pretension. I don't mind what people do with their lives, but I do mind very much what they do with mine.

There, I told you I shouldn't start.

Great for

  • Barking Dogs, on a scale you wouldn't believe
  • Chainsaws, powertools, again, see above
  • Neighbours who look the other way, or cross the road to avoid each other

Not great for

  • People who drive and walk around in a stupor
  • Dog faeces on the pavement
  • No community Vibe at all, in fact a Negative Vibe that sucks the life out of people

"Why not live here, smart move if you do."

A few mins drive to anything in the cbd, 2 primary schools in 2 kms, North Hobart shops, cinema and cafes 5 mins, Friends College 5 mins, Hobart Aquatic centre 7 mins, VIEWS and all day sun if you face north side, Knocklofty reserve. Older houses and space on the blocks.

Great for

  • Close to CBD without the hassles
  • Views and all day sun on north face

Not great for

  • City council - spend little $$ in the area but keep increasing the fees.

"So close yet feels so far"

This small suburb is a walk to the CBD, to North Hobart shopping and eating out, and a tiny drive to anything you could ever want, without the inner city feel or parking problems. The families care about their kids and are invloved in their lives. A lovely spot.
