Reviews of Newman St, Newtown

"It's a secret little street with everything you need!"

Newman Street was named in late 1860's after the first school principle of Newtown. It has kept its historical charm and terraces through many transformations in the last 140 years. Newman Street is now closed to all traffic from King Street to improve noise and saftey to the local Infants, Primary and Performing Arts High School students and residents. The Sydney of City Council has tree lined the street as part of the Greening Sydney strategy and offers great support for rubbish and gardening waste. I recently had spray paint graffiti on my roller door, after contacting the council they sent a contractor out the following week to remove and re-paint the door. Great service! There is a great little park behind Newman Street called Lillian Fowler Reserve, named after the first female lawyer to be registered in Australia. The park is great for picnics, kids and ball games and provides a community garden co-op for local residence who need mulch, seedlings and community hobbies. Newman St is positioned between the creativity of King Street and the village atmosphere of Erskineville. If you want access to Theatres, Cinema's, Food, Wine, Galleries, Festivals and some wonderful people, this is a perfect place to live. The on-street parking can get busy at times, but a parking permit helps and local rangers do patrol weekly. I so enjoy the sounds of piano's and flutes rehearsing from the local theatre and neighbourhood. My neighbours are friendly and we all keep an eye on each others homes. A new shopping centre and gymnasium have opened on the corner of King and Newman Streets providing last minute groceries, organic fruit and vegetables and are both open extended hours for convenience. It's a dog friend area and it only takes me 10 minutes door to door by train each morning to my office in the city. A great little spot that has kept its federation charm through the decades and is protected for the future.
PS - I also got the bus to Bondi Beach from Erskineville last week for a swim! You have direct access to both Newtown and Erskineville train stations and many bus services.
