Looking for a home in Newton?

"Land that should never have been built on."

The area suffers from highly reactive clays with unbelievable shrinking-swelling cycles that will crack buildings, warp timbers and see the loss of an occasional small dog down a massive summer crack in an unwatered garden. As a result of this, the predominant 1950s-1970s housing stock is all on the verge of demolition. One only has to look at the warped profile of Gorge Road to see this force of nature - whoosh there goes another water main!

As a consequence the suburb has a mixed character of (i) bright newer houses built on floating slabs that handle the soil conditions better, which are mostly owned by younger aspirationals and (ii) patchy, cracked, older homes built on standard foundations, owned by retirees and pending demolition/development in the near future.

The area benefits greatly from a historical Italian population who contribute to an excellent modern safe Australian community and provide for excellent food stores in the general vicinity. On the other hand there are far too many arches, aluminium roller shutters and concrete gardens for one's visual comfort.

Given the tacky NE industrial quarter of Newton and the eyesore of the Target Shopping Centre, I'd keep driving to the adjacent foothills of Athelstone or Rostrevor for a more appealing natural environment.

"Quiet , Clean & Very Safe. Perfect for all walks of life."

I’ve lived in Newton for nearly 30 years , and not once have I had any issue with theft or criminal activity. A simple 15 minute drive gets you into the heart of Adelaide CBD, or a 5-10 minute drive can see you at Norwood Parade, Burnisde Shopping precinct or the Tea Tree Plaza Westfield. Better yet we have our own TWO Newton shopping centres with all the big shops. Newton has a lovely community feel People are very friendly, a mixture of elderly European migrants with lovely gardens & the younger generation starting families. Situated on the footsteps of the adelaide hills we have magnificent views of the green hills. We also get the occasional koala or exotic bird in our yards. I have nothing bad to say about Newton. Fantastic place to live , retire or grow. 10/10

"Nice green area not far from the city"

There are some great shops in Newton so you won't have to go far to get what you need. The shops at Newton have a great selection of continental foods for the cooks at home that want the best produce to make those Italian dishes.
There are some newer houses in here on small blocks as well as the older houses on larger blocks which provides a bit over everything for a lot of people. It’s a nice area to walk around in.
Not far from the city and well serviced by public transport it’s a good area to live for young families and people that want the lifestyle of the suburbs with easy access to the city.
The shops at Firle are also not far away.
