Reviews of Newtown, QLD

"A beautiful suburb with character"

Newtown is one of Toowoomba's largest suburbs (geographically and by population). It is an inner city suburb with tree lined streets and plenty of old character homes and workers cottages on good size blocks. People here like the appeal of a home with good bones and character and take pride in their houses. Even walking along my street I can see people tending to their gardens, painting or renovating aspects of their homes. My neighbors (not just immediate) are friendly and generous and are good wholesome, working people. There is a mix of old and new with young families and older retirees. Growing up in Toowoomba in the 80s and 90s Newtown was most certainly a rougher area of town and primarily a rental area however this is not the case now. I can walk to the CBD in around 10 minutes, I have buses at my door and an array of close schools, coffee shops and beautiful parks.... It's no wonder that this area is becoming more and more popular.

Being inner city however you will have people parking on street at time and strolling past your house and with that comes some level of vehicle and person noise. I can honestly say living near one of the main thoroughfares of Newtown (and near a school, Holberton Street) that the noise dissipates quite quickly outside of commute times (when I to am on my way to and from work) 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm. On a weekend noise is not really an issue at all.

I've lived in many suburbs in Toowoomba and both my wife and I feel genuinely at home in Newtown. It is a welcoming, pleasant, close to all amenities and really quite good value for money. We've never felt worried about crime or terrible neighbours and cannot really pick any major faults with the area.

Great for

  • Cost of Living
  • Beautiful Tree Lined Streets
  • Close to CBD

Not great for

  • Street Noise at times
  • Older and therefore smaller homes (no McMansions here!)

Looking for a home in Newtown?

"A convenient suburb being regentrified!"

The absolute best part about newtown is it's convient proximity to the city, while still maintaining a quiet neighbouhood atmosphere.

I live on one of the main streets in Newtown, so my view of traffic and noise is coloured by the never ending torrent of vehicle passing my front gate. However if it wasn't for that, we would never want to leave. The side streets are quiet and have nice houses.

We've never had any trouble with security, however you do get the occaisional rowdy group passing by on a Saturday night.

Many of the houses in Newtown have been occupied by owner/renvators who have restored the face of the suburb and thus raised it's profile as a desirable place to live.

Newtown still has "corner store" type businesses around the place, including a butcher, small medical centre, pharmacy, Pizza & Pasta place, but if you weren't inclined to offer the your business there are several shopping centres within a 3min drive. Several Service Stations around the suburb.

Includes:
Newtown Park is a large historic park which includes the State Rose Garden.
2 Roman Catholic Primary Schools
1 Roman Catholic Boys School
1 Roman Catholic Girls High School
1 State Primary School

"Not to be mistaken with Newtown Toowoomba."

Newtown, Ipswich is an inner city suburb that features a cross section of architecture, but particularly, Queenslanders and Colonials. These character homes are generally sitting on a large block and are very popular in the market place.

Newtown is close to Ipswich Girls Grammar, Central State primary School. the beautiful Queens Park, Booval Fair Shopping Centre and rail and bus links.

"The good with the bad"

I have lived in numerous places, but i must say that Newtown is pretty good. Its close to the CBD, It takes me 7 minutes to walk to the shopping centre. the houses are cheap, but thats becuase they are old. In other words good for renovating and first home buyers. There can be some noisy streets, but if you ask me, 1 noisy day out of a month is pretty good compared to other areas.

"The Real Truth about Newtown in Toowoomba"

It's dissapointing to see a recent negative review about Newtown. I am a local real estate agent who specialises in selling character homes especially in Newtown. I was raised as a child in the area and I have first hand seen the transition of the area (very similar to Paddington in Brisbane) over the past 10 - 15 years. Newtown is perfectly positioned close to Toowoomba's CBD and has some of the areas oldest character homes. The area has become very popular with renovators and first home buyers and we are now starting to see beautiful renovated character homes come onto the market and sell for high prices. Here's a tip for free...... Newtown in time will become a very valuable suburb especailly character homes on good sized allotments.

Rentals in Newtown

"Taylor Street, Newtown"

Newtown borders the "ghettos" of Toowoomba - like Rockville, Wilsonton & Wyalla - and occasionally the ghetto aspects of these suburbs spill into this one. There is a lot of break-ins and car theft, a lot of domestic violence call-outs and every so often your "they was such a quiet family!" neighbours end up being the ones running a clandestine speed lab from their back shed.

As anywhere in Toowoomba, the public transport system is horrendous - do NOT move to Toowoomba unless you like walking everywhere or you have a reliable car. There is a bus service in Toowoomba, but its sporadic, usually late.

Theres also been a few instances in the last year or so where children playing in their front yards have been approached by strangers and attempted abductions have occured. Watch your children please!!

Newtown park is nice, has a beautiful rose garden and limited BBQ facilities. Just wear shoes because its a notorious hangout for heroin addicts who like to leave needles in the grass.
