"friendly neighbourhood"

I live on the border of Normanhurst and Thornleigh and I love my neighbourhood. It is very leafy and green unlike the newer suburbs in Western Sydney, it has a large influx of parks to play sport at or bring your kids to. There are many areas to bushwalk and the brickpit which has minigolf, golf, play equipment, skatepark and indoor basketball courts. It is the type of neighbourhood where you can greet and chat with others when walking by and feel safe to walk at night as a woman.

"Nice family suburb with full of greenery and good schools."

I moved to Normanhurst 2 years back and very happy with the decision. Love the greenery of the suburb and at the same time close to everything surrounded by good suburbs with lot of choice to spend outdoors, train station will give country side feeling. I enjoy walks inside the streets with lot of trees and beautiful houses. I catch the train to city which takes 50 min to Wynyard and return late nights and my wife travel to Parramatta which take around 25 mins . Generally very safe suburb with good schools like Loretta for girls and Normanhurst boys selective are best. If you want to send to private schools there are plenty of choice with good schools in surrounded suburbs. Looking forward for north connect and hopefully it will reduce the traffic in pennant hills road.

"A nice, safe suburb in a convenient location"

I lived here for 8 years and enjoyed it thoroughly. We lived in a nice, quiet street full of families or retired couples and most of the neighbors were friendly (with the exception of a few, as to be expected anywhere!). It's very convenient being 5 minutes from Hornsby, and you're also right in the middle where the North Shore meets the Northern Suburbs. It's not cheap to buy or rent in the area, but such is the cost of living in a nice leafy suburb!

"Sense of community"

We love living and raising our family in Normanhurst, it has some of the best private and public schools in Sydney. The parks and recreation are wonderful, with a sense of tranquility however it is only 30 min drive to the city or a comfortable 40 minute train ride from Normo station to the city!!
The shopping is great as Hornsby Westfield is a 10 min drive or a short train ride or Thornleigh marketplace is great for groceries and not as hectic as Westfield. Wahroonga village is also close by for great coffees and cafes (and a great fenced kiddie play park).
I have not lived in a suburb before where there was such a lovely neighbourly spirit, they help with minding the kids, dog and of course putting bins out when you are away.... to have that trust in your neighbours is rare!
we love Normo, come and join this caring community ;-)

I also live in Normanhurst and have done so for many years. Unfortunately, I disagree with some of the claims made by minime regarding the travel times into the city. Seeing as how no interurban service stops at Normanhurst Station, never has there been a train that has gotten to a city station in 40 minutes. Minime should read the train timetables a bit more thoroughly in future. A train trip to the city takes more than 50 minutes and depending on which station, almost an hour.
With regards to driving to the city in 30 minutes, this too is a highly optimistic and misleading figure, perhaps achievable in the middle of the night, with all lights green and using motorways. In normal traffic conditions, even using the M2 etc it would be quite unachievable. In peak periods, forget it. Minime, are you a real estate agent?

"A great stepping stone into the North Shore, not that many care to leave once there."

Normanhurst is a suburb full of surprises.

Most visitor pass through Normanhurst on their way up or down Pennant Hills Rd, not realising that the suburb contains some of the best kept secrets in the area.

I walk every street in the entire suburb weekly, and can attest to it having many beautiful, leafy, quiet streets hidden away from the main road which dissects the suburb into northern and southern sectors.

It has the advantage of being a suburb unencumbered with large shopping or entertainment developments which bring traffic, noise and filth - yet it is within a relative stone’s throw to Hornsby for those requiring their regular fix of retail therapy. Many shop at Hornsby for huge variety, although the Woolworths at Thornleigh Market Place (cnr Pennant Hills Rd & Comenarra Parkway) is one of that chains best. A 15-20 minute car trip will also see you in Macquarie Shopping Centre or 25-30 minutes to Chatswood (depending on time of day of course).

However all this aside, it must be noted that the small strip of shops adjacent to the train station are excellent for those last minute items. There is a great eatery, liquor store, newsagent, Laundromat, hair dresser and milk bar to name most, but not all, of those in that handy strip. Medical facilities at the end of the strip include a Doctors Surgery and Dentist. Child care and both public and private schools are in and about the suburb – some of the best in the country.

Sharing a common border with Wahroonga and with Turramurra & Waitara close by, Normanhurst would be an ideal stepping stone for those wishing to move into the North Shore - if they chose to move on (which many don't). Many local residents will attest to having been breed, born and raised in Normanhurst - having never left, or unlikely to unless it’s in a timber box. There are quite a few instances of Gen X children moving back into the suburb where they grew up in order to raise their families. I think this is probably one of the best testaments to Normanhurst being a fantastic suburb for families, retirees and couples,….. and maybe singles that enjoy the quiet life.

Whilst the suburb is affordable for most, demand for property remains relatively high. No doubt this is also partly due to the rail corridor that transverses the suburb (running almost parallel with Pennant Hills Rd) from Hornsby to Epping, then onto Chatswood. There are 8 stops between Normanhurst station and Chatswood - with an "all stations" journey taking just 32 minutes. This gives residents good access to the city via Epping, or Hornsby if going the other way.

The median price for houses in Normanhurst in 2009 (covering 78 sales) was $655,000 whilst at the time of writing this review on 23/06/10 (covering 23 sales) it is now $690,000.

"Suburb with good schools"

Normanhurst on the northern side of Sydney is made very popular due to the presence of a selective high school in the area - Normanhurst Boys High School. The famous Catholic school for girls - Loreto Normanhurst, is also located in this suburb. Normanhurst is about a a thirty minutes' drive to the city during off-peak hours. The suburb itself is quite nice with a very middle income demographic. Since it is located on Pennant Hills Rd, it is very accessible to Hornsby and is very close to the M1 freeway that takes you to the Central Coast. If you love going to the Central Coast every weekend, Normanhurst would have to be one of the best places in Sydney to live in. Just make sure you live well away from the high school and Pennant Hills Rd so you do not have to hear the traffic all day long!
