Reviews of North Fremantle, WA

"Perth's little gem"

I've lived in North Freo my whole life and love it. It's pretty unique that you can walk from the river to the beach in a matter of minutes, and there's the train station in the middle which gets you to Freo in 4 minutes and the city in 25. Obviously if you're situated next to the road or rail it's not ideal, but same can be said for any suburb. The shoreline along the river is pretty unique and there are plenty of little spots along the river to walk, swim, cliff jump. The walking path goes along the river up into Mosman Park and has an always amazing view where you often see dolphins jumping. Very popular path for walking the dog, and you can also walk to the dog beach.
The river has a large shallow area in the middle so you can swim a short distance and just walk around on the sand bank which is only shin deep with the lower tide. I love showing mates the area and particularly near the river I've been told it looks like Greece. A lot of north Freo is pretty affluent because of the beach/river location, there's a marina if you need to park your boat . The local cafe/bars are awesome (particularly at Leighton), you can enjoy a coffee, beer, cocktail by the beach. Walking down to watch the sun set over the ocean never gets old. I feel like there's a greater feeling of community since the suburb is fairly small, and you can be a part of the community garden which is awesome. To me it's just a paradise.

Looking for a home in North Fremantle?

"Pearse street"

North freo is in a beautiful spot and some areas would be fine I'm sure but avoid Pearse street! We lived here for a while and it was horrendous! The noise is horrific and nonstop! The traffic noise and trains screeching and shaking the house was unbareable!!!! We didn't get 1 undisturbed nights sleep in years! I'd avoid this and the surrounding streets closeby. Also crime was pretty bad, bikes stolen etc and someone had their garden plants all dug up, it's a open walkway so lots of people walking past the houses.

"A magic spot"

North Fremantle is a small suburb, tucked away at the narrow point between the river and sea. If you head down to the river end there are some beautiful wild areas where luckily the state and local council have had the foresight to not let developers build up to the river. There is generally a generous public area between the river and the housing. If fact the housing is set back far enough that it still feels quite wild exploring along the shoreline (unlike Nedlands, Dalkeith, Claremont, Peppermint Grove etc).

"Could be great but trucks let it down big time"

We live in an apartment on the river (Doepel Street) and love the location and community feel. Queen Victoria Street has great bars and restaurants too. The only drawbacks are: the traffic noise from the bridges, the enormous number of trucks passing all day long, and the fact that there is no grocery or convenience store anywhere walkable. You have to head into Fremantle or Mosman Park for a Coles or IGA.

"Great except for the council"

Fremantle council is doin its best to ruin North Freo with higher density decision making. But it is hard to stuff things up too badly in this suburb. There is now a childcare next to the train station (perfect) and the Rose Hotel now has a mens and women's GP. Not far up the road in Cottesloe is a bulk billed GP.
The big drawback in this suburb is the lack of a grocery store of any kind and ATMs are distant. But almost everyone is a couple of minutes from the river and the beach is just across stirling highway. It really is quite idealic in that respect. The bars and restaurants are close and cool, but they are not on top of most residences as they are nestled in between Vic Ave and Stirling Hwy.
The worst thing about North Freo is the council. They do virtually nothing useful up here as they are all from across the river. They seem to be proponents of "not in our back yard" as they are actively approving high density in our suburb and keeping it away from the south side.

Great for

  • 2 mins from the beach, river, cottesloe, and fremantle centrele
  • Close Community support, active social events
  • Visually ascetic , lots of trees ,parks

Not great for

  • Council
  • Noise

Rentals in North Fremantle

"A forgotten suburb where residents are ignored."

This is not a place for residential peace and quiet. The flour mill is allowed to operate 24 hours a day , 7 days a week. Large trucks start arriving at 4.30am until 9pm at night. In summer forklifts operate throughout the night. Windows can not be opened because of noise and flour dust. Huge trucks entering and leaving the harbour congest the roads and are dangerous to cars, cyclists and pedestrians. While trying to cross Stirling Highway, I was nearly blown onto the road by a speeding truck. It is a pity that the natural beauty has been invaded by industrial operations. The 'buzz' word at the moment by Fremantle council is building "affordable housing." This means it is for people who have no other choice and therefore must accept second best. Think twice before moving here because as a resident you have no rights for peace and cleanliness.
