Is the wind really that annoying?

Hi guys,

Just wondering is the wind is really that big a deal, especially in the winter months. Everytime i look at places in Port Melbourne, I notice the wind is pretty strong. Does it get really annoying after a while, or is it relatively ok?

Hi AJ,

We've only been living there since June but have noticed it gets a bit windy on occasion. One street we used to park at very close to the beach we nicknamed the "windiest street in the world" as it's like a wind tunnel on certain days. Think it's Esplanade East. But they're building apartments there now. Still it was only windy near the beach end.

Port has many benefits...relatively uncrowded beaches (not chocka like St Kilda), good restaurants and pubs. I notice that the Fountain Inn aka Drifters Alibi aka now the "Sloney Pony" has reopened. Will have to check it out. Heard there's a good chef there.

Hi vicpow,

Thanks for the fast reply! I'm looking to move into the area in Jan\Feb, and have started house hunting. There's so much to love about Port Melbourne, I just hope I love it when i move in.

I stopped off at the French Crepery on the weekend on Bay Street. If you havent eaten there, I highly recommend it.

Also, in Summer do you use the beach much?

Hi AJ,

It's a great area. We love it. We used to live in Carlton which was cool but love the community atmosphere in PM. You go into a shop and people actually have a chat rather than grunt at you.

Used to drive to Port beach in summer and used it rather than the "trendier" beaches say at South Melb or St Kilda. There's also a dog beach on the other side of the jetty - if you have a dog.

Now we've finally moved to PM we plan to do some swims and get a little fitter, especially when daylight saving starts and the weather gets better.

A recommendation if you're renting....look to move before Feb. Rental market gets very tight in late Jan/Feb.

Also try the Velvet Bar (near the Town Hall) for great brekkies on the weekend.

Hi vicpow,

I'm planning to buy, but I'm glad you said it has a great community aspect. That's definitely the vibe I got from being down there on Sat mornings for brekky and visits.

I also really like the pubs and clubs down there as well, and with summer just around the corner, it's only going to get better.

Can't wait to move in!!!!

Thanks for the advice vicpow :)

Following the real estate theme, the wind issue is all about 'location, location, location' If you are beach front (house or apartment) then a sea breeze (or gust) is what you'll get (the higher you are the faster it blows..something about aerodynamics and pushing the wind up!). Once beyond these man made wind breaks it it pretty much OK. Occasionally you'll get a street with the wind tunnel effect, but I find that most of Port Melb is generally OK as it is so flat and you have some big buildings providing a bit of a buffer.

I agree Simon4Seisman,

Everywhere is a trade off. I will gladly live with the wind for the beachy lifestyle. I had brekky again down in Port Melbourne on the weekend, a nice little cafe on the corner of Bay Street and Rouse Street. Was perfect weather and not much wind at all, really can't wait to find a place to live down there. Thanks for the advise though!!
