Port Pirie, SA 5540

The stigma of lead has kept the price of this great country town low for years yet the smelter operators have spent millions and continue to do so, to ensure lead levels in the area are low. A wonderful community lives and thrives here within a 2 1/2 hour drive of Adelaide and most importantly about the same distance of the Olympic Dam Mine Site and surrounding operations. Excellent fishing is found in the Spencer Gulf and the Southern Flinders Ranges are about 20 minutes drive away. All facilities are located within the town, plenty of schools, shops, parks are to be found as well as the hospital. With houses still available under $100k and plenty of work available it is definitely worth a look.

I was born and raised in Port Pirie. Childcare and schooling is great for primary school kids and younger, though the public highschool needs to fix its priorities at times. great for people with young children with great neighbourly atmosphere in most places, and is perfectly safe for and you will often see kids at 8-10 upwards wandering the streets on their own during the day just hanging around happily and safely. However it isn't the best place for families with teenagers, with a high unemployment rate and almost nothing for teenagers to do unless they are skaters and go to the skatepark, so often there is vandalism of public property during the nights or hoons down aerodrome road trying to alleviate their boredom.

got all the shops you should need, however there are often problems with strong stench of sulphur in the air caused by the smelters down the main road, and this smell will often blanket the entire town for at least 1/2 an hour. Though has become much less regular compared to when I was younger, though still something to be mindfull of for those with respiratory problems.

Otherwise is a nice little 'city' that is mostly safe to wander around at night, low traffic levels, good options for shopping, great for younger families and their children (apart from lead levels), also high level of gay and lesbian couples coming through with the newer generations, so people are normally quite accepting.

The people, for the most part, are very friendly and helpful. There's a strong sense of community within the town, signaled by the many community-based events in place. Relative to Australian towns of similar size and geographical position, Port Pirie is a bargain buy. For under $200,000 you can pick up a nice 3 bedroom home for the family. Despite these great qualities, Pirie cannot hide from the fact it has a Lead producing smelter sitting down the end of the main street. While a lot of money is put into an initiative called "Ten For Them" (goal is to keep young children's lead levels below 10 Micrograms per decilitre of blood), there are many kids with alarmingly high levels. But, provided kids maintain good hygiene, and a healthy lifestyle, dangerous levels can be avoided. The only positive aspect the smelter brings, is healthy employment. It currently provides a couple of thousand workers with employment. My personal tip if you are looking to buy in Port Pirie is try to buy as far from the smelter as possible. It really is a nice place once you get past the enigma of the smelters.

I have lived and worked in Port Pirie for quite a while now and love the place! Its big enough for all the extras you look for in a city and small enough to not be crowded out or feel like your living in the 'rat race'! Its only 2 hours to Adelaide and on the great safe waters of the upper Spencer Gulf. The home values and returns for thetown have stood up well over the years and is a great place for investment with low vacancy rates and cheaper priced housing than many centres.
Its a great place and its no accident they call it 'The Friendly City'. Port Pirie!

Realestate.com.au have got this town wrong... It should say 100%.... It is one of the friendliest towns in the state, with everything at your fingertips. A huge array of housing, including old renovated villas and bungalows also the new modern conventional designs. One of the best sporting towns, good shopping, good pubs, good cafes. You only have to see how many people take an evening stroll to see how safe it is !!!...

Port Pirie is South Australia's 6th largest town, with a population of over 13,000.

Situated just 2 hours from Adelaide, Port Pirie is readily accessible by car, bus and multiple flights per day. Port Pirie is just 4 kilometres from the sea.

Port Pirie's main industry is lead smelting, and this has caused some serious health problems for the local population, as well as many of the sealife, but substantial work has been undertaken to improve this in recent years.

The town has many essential services and facilities on offer. There are a number of schools, both public and private, a TAFE campus for tertiary education and a number of shops, pubs and restaurants.
