"Wonderful Tree Lined Streets"
One of the great advantages of a long established suburb is the number of substantial trees and the parklands.
South Perth is blessed with both. Take James Mitchell Park with it's spectacular views across the Swan River to the City.Also the Royal Perth Golf Club being so close to the CBD.
Parents ,with children ,come here due to the popularity of the schooling. Wesley College, South Perth Primary, St Columbus College are all well regarded together with many more in Como.

What's not to love about South Perth! Looking North across the Swan River, The City offers a stunning backdrop from South Perth. Home of Perth Zoo, South Perth has amazing energy, whether you are strolling around the river, taking a ferry across to the City, Cycling around the river, picnicking in the park or grabbing a coffee from one of the many cafe's in both Mends St and Angelo St. There are also good public transport connections, Bus and Ferry. "Progressing forward"
The council is doing a fabulous job of revamping local parks and areas. South Perth was showing signs of age many years a go but now we have re-energised the suburb with a good mix of young families and older people. The cafes are some of the best and we have a great selection of schools.

"Seen better days"
Not a nice suburb. Its clean and has public transport. That's about all.
No families, no shops, no nightlife, no anything. Most the buildings are per 1980 and are in need of repair badly.
My advice.
AVOID
Streets are showing their age. The council does minimal maintenance, mows the grass once a month that's about it.
It used to be good 20-30 years ago but now its gone down hill and still is. I think because they blocked any new development that would cause their property values to fall. The RE Agents have a stranglehold and they know it.

"One of the most friendly suburbs in Perth!"
Have lived in South Perth for maybe about 5 or 6 years now, and it is an ideal location to for parents, young couples and the elderly. Situated along the southern side of the Swan River, South Perth is well equipped with dining of almost every cuisine imaginable, and impressive schooling and education. There is also tremendously easy access to public transport, as well as close and accessible to the CBD, either by car, or by train (via Canning Bridge)

Another Preference & A Great Suburb with all Facilities & Amenities with Major Shopping Centres Nearby such as Garden City & Carousel & also has good Cafe Strips on Mends Street & in Karawara. Located where Perth's Zoo, Wesley & Penhros Secondary Schools are, near the Como Hotel, Where the Ferry Heads to from Barrack Street Jetty & the Foreshore.

"So close to the city yet it's quiet."
I've lived in South Perth since 1982 growing up in my parent's house. Living on one of this great suburb's quiet streets it offers a life less vibrant than areas such as Subiaco but yet you are near everything you need. Sure it is quiet but that why we like it. Also, there is no snob factor, there is an abundance of beautiful character homes and a mix of cheaper or more expensive homes suit to many tastes. I walk my dog most nights with no problem, never been broken into...I don't anyone who has but I accept it does happen. Having a business in the area I can also confirm that most people in the area are working class, friendly and most seem happy to help you or just talk. With some lovely parks, natural features such as the foreshore and you can even launch a boat on the Swan River and go to Rottnest Island. Most people who move here do stay.

"Beautiful and so close to the city!"
The most vibrant and beautiful suburb in Perth ! While it is so close to the river and city there are many quiet streets in this prestigious suburb. Houses are expensive, however older townhouses and units are more affordable to buy.

"Used to be good"
Grew up here used to be good but has been destroyed by money hungry baby boomers, tearing down there parents houses subdiving them into small dull lots and selling them at inflated prices.
Would never move back there if you want a nice suburb near the river, near the freeway, shops not to far away and big houses on nice big leafy green streets move to Rossmoyne its way better.

Not true - still a great suburb and so close to great facilities - the foreshore, river, city and still many spacious houses. Not over-inflated prices at all given all the benefits.
How can you compare to Rossmoyne!?

I totally agree, I grew up in South Perth and it was a lovely suburb then. My father built the house himself in the 1960's and thankfully a nice family have it now and renovated it. Unfortunately, SP has been taken over by rich toffee nosed snobs that can't even manage a smile or say hello like they used to. I loved South Perth but couldn't live there anymore because of now sad memories and its very expensive houses now!
Agree. It was very nice back in the 80's but then the baby boomers just sat on their houses and then sold nasty cheap units. They made their money and left a mess. Now its more of a cess pool of unmaintained rentals and underdeveloped shops and facilities.
My guess is the doom sayers just cant afford to buy in South Perth which irks them! Living in Rossmoyne may be great but it includes getting stuck in the morning and evening traffic jams on the freeway whereas if you live in South Perth you take the first exit off! In fact you dont have to drive - A bike ride to the city is only 15 - 20 minutes from South Perth along the river edge and the airport 15 minutes drive away! Ferry is an option too. Everyone to their own taste but we find our street and others full of old Californian bungalows built in the 1930s! - I have 2 pubs, Coles and schools all within 5 minutes drive. But it is still a quiet suburb. The price is no doubt high because we are so close to the city and the blocks smaller - pretty common for all inner city areas around the world and cannot see what baby boomers have to do with it specifically! See how much you pay for small blocks and units in inner suburbs in Melbourne and Sydney? Some of the 70s and 80s flats are not so attractive but it is a trade off for the convenience of being beside the river front and within 5 minutes of Perth city! Equally, some of the modern mansions are terrible but that is caused by Australian architects and house owners knocking down all the trees so they can fill the whole block up with concrete which I dont believe is unique to South Perth! Australians have the biggest houses in the world! The baby boomer period seems no better or worse than the modern builder who wants the largest house possible, all causing overheating of the suburbs and providing nothing for wildlife and the bees! At least we still have a lot of trees in South Perth and long necked turtles in the ponds and I dont need a large garden which I have to look after as I have the river front for space. Each to his own but we have so often thanked our lucky stars we decided to buy in South Perth 30 years ago for many reasons, but especially when exiting the freeway so quickly in the now daily traffic jams coming home from work! If you can afford it, I would not discount this suburb.
agreed.... it used to have such beautiful houses but now small lifeless concrete lots. Overinflated prices for something crappy... it was great until money hungry people killed this suburb
