"Relaxing Lifestyle with Wineries at your front door"

I have lived at Glen Aplin where you will find many excellent wineries within a 3 or 4 minutes drive. There are also a couple of fine restaurants close by. Glen Aplin is peaceful yet very convenient to the town centre of Stanthorpe - only a 10 minute drive away. The views to the mountains are fantastic and gorgeous sunsets are plentiful. The town of Stanthorpe caters for most of your needs and boasts a great market one Sunday in the month. Along with all the festivals throughout the year and the year 'round availability of fine wines, cheeses, olives, etc - you'd find Stanthorpe and it's surrounds are hard place to beat for a relaxed, friendly and peaceful lifestyle.

"Very expensive"

Stanthorpe like all the southern downs is very expensive. The rates are extremely high and council is useless.
I would suggest moving to a region like darling downs Goondiwindi where rates are half the price and Council is actually fantastic in Goondiwindi.

"A small town full of old and grumpy residents"

Having only just moved to Stanthorpe we have decided to move our family and business elsewhere. Unfortunately, the town is full of old and grumpy people and way to many tourists to make it a unpleasant town:

That's a shame, we need less bigoted boomers and more educated city or coast people here.

dorothyj1

I agree with the above comment. To many old bigots who complain about the city folk. Though I have noticed more city folk leaving due to poor council/councillors and excessive rates.

It's sad that people are leaving because of council, but I understand. I feel it does the town a whole lot of good to have new people here. Yes, the old bigots are certainly a big negative about Stanthorpe. Hopefully come the state election we can vote for some better councillors.

"stanthorpe qld town of chinese whispers"

i saw other negative reviews and didnt believe them, come to visit but please hear this warning its the town of chinese whispers,i purchased a property here,im a carpenter/property developer that was going to offer intrest free homes, finding workers is impossible,i was also going to open a workshop for local mechanics but progress is impossible here,as my frustration for the negative attitude of the people grew the locals ganged up against me,they rip eachother off,and threatned my safetey, dont

there are definitely cliques here and people who think because they lived here for 30 years in the same house that they can do whatever they want. there is a certain local mechanic who has also tried to rip me off with belligerent attitude. It is a beautiful town but desperately needs fresh blood, educated people and professional behaviour in the workplace. too many old gossips and bigots.

CONS:Council - very expensive region to live or even start a business.
We decided to go inland a little more due to excessive council rates and policy.

Yes, I'm wondering what Goondiwindi would be like.

"A small town large on crime"

Firstly CaveatEmptor review is zemblality. Not only does his display name literally mean 'Let buyers beware' but fails to emphasize on the lack of infrastructure for young people, families and children. Additionally, councils ongoing corruption is ruining the region. Southern Downs Regional Council prefers to pay off employee rather than address the issues the region continues to face.

"Expensive, high crime and a town of the past"

I could go into the usual high council rates, high crime rate and lower income demographic but the town speaks for itself. Southern Downs Region is poorly managed by a Council and Councillors who have conflict of interest and in most large business/organisations.
Stanthorpe is becoming a town of the past with a decline in Tourism and nothing to offer - unless you are a fan of the quintessential wine and cheese in a run down bed and breakfast fun whilst watching the lower income demographic do burnouts down the main streets in town.

What crime problems are in Stanthorpe? Genuine questions here, no trolling. Did you move here from Brisbane? How much are the average residental rates for a 3 bedroom home? Thanks.

Johnny Peterson

Average rates for a 3 bedroom home are between $3500-$4000 per year. On top of that you have water charges (seperate bill) depending on usage around $1200 per year.

"A nice town let down by Council and expensive rates"

Stanthorpe is a nice enough town unfortunately located with in the Southern Downs Council municipality. The town is clean enough and worth a short visit but not idea for families or activities. We recently moved to Stanthorpe but have made the decision to move away due to the increasing expense - primarily due to the local council. As another mentioned rates are very expensive for even a small house/land and the local service/infrastructure is lacking.

"Useless Council - high rates - expensive"

Stanthorpe in Queensland is horrible made that way by a useless Southern Downs Regional Council. The rates for both residential property and commercial are very high.
Parks are never mown, water charges are very high and there is nothing for kids to do.
Stanthorpe may seem like a nice cold town, especially during Summer but it's cold and dreary during winter and very hot during summer.

"Cold and beatiful"

Lovely country town located away and high above the sea, breathing in clean country mountain air. Beautiful countryside similar to Armidale very green and hilly featuring open country and bushland, nice homes, friendly people and relaxed atmosphere are all a big part of Stanthorpe.

My favourite part of Stanthorpe is the unique climate, Freezing winters with frost and some with a fall of snow(different from the rest of Queenslands climate). All seasons are quiet unique here, whilst autumn brings all the bright colours into life, summers are mild and comfortable and spring being a mixture of all seasons.

I personally think this country city is a great place to live or to visit, overall its one of the best parts of Queensland Australia(in my opinion), excaping the heat and enjoying an alternative lifestyle.

Great for

  • Friendly locals and lovely green surrounding countryside
  • Unique Climate(due to its elevation)
  • Relaxed atmosphere and great shops.

Not great for

  • Low to average property value
  • Fairbit of rain (especially summer)
  • Not a whole lot of work for the individuals

"Stanthorpe - Interesting Granite Belt town."

Stanthorpe is located in the granite belt south west of Brisbane and at 1000m above sea level has been called one of the coolest places in Queensland. Because of these cool conditions Stanthorpe has an excellent wine industry with many wineries to visit and sample some fine wines. Many other stone fruits not normally associated with QLD are grown here such as apricots and peaches. Stanthorpe offers good accommodation and has excellent shopping facilities. The town is surrounded by national parks offering good bushwalking with plenty of opportunities to see some amazing flora and fauna. Home prices vary in the area with some good starter homes still available.
