Reviews of Sylvania, NSW

"Great location with ammenities close by"

Sylvania can be defined into a couple of different areas. West of Princes Hwy, East until Corea St and then the remaining down to Port Hacking Rd.

The first you’ll find long and winding streets covered with trees and wildlife, with many houses having water views to oyster bay if they’re set at the right angle (think Edward St, Young St and Rocklea Cs). I would argue this is the place to be for various reasons but mostly because it’s tucked away and has direct northbound access to the Hwy. It’s also the only side of Sylvania with water access at the Esplanade and kangaroo point reserves. Which make for good walks and nice picnics.

Sylvania heights in the middle will have a couple of schools and houses with views to Cronulla and the ocean if they’re set toward the east edge of the elevation. Streets are wide but not as many trees and can get a little warmer because of this. Although they get a good breeze. Sylvania heights public school is a great primary school.

The lower part of Sylvania is close to Southgate shopping centre and Sylvania High school. This area is probably less desirable but has good access to those ammenities and a few football and netball fields.

In terms of location, in my opinion it’s one of the best areas in South East Sydney due to its easy access to Cronulla, Hurstville and Sutherland all within 15 mins. The airport in 20-25 and Miranda/ Southgate shopping centre in 5. Which I might add are fantastic shopping centres that will satisfy all your shopping needs. There is also a small collection of shops at Sylvania heights.

It’s also the gateway to Wollongong for most of Sydney so traffic can sometimes be a little heavy because of this in some spots. Although this also means a trip down there only takes 45 minutes. Overall very well positioned. Great for families but not for young singles. The area is comprised of older families and retirees.

I will end saying that public transport leaves a lot to be desired. There are bus service to Miranda and hurstville train stations but that is it and your house may not be close to a stop which would add in a fair bit of walking.

Hope this helped.

Looking for a home in Sylvania?

"Lifestyle"

This hidden gem of a suburb surrounded by water offers a relaxed family lifestyle. Sylvania Southgate is the local shopping centre and it has a fantastic whole food market that makes a mean guacamole. It also has a Woolworths, Coles, 24 hour Kmart, butchers, bakers, AMF bowling, post office and everything else that you may need. Besides the shopping there are fantastic local schools and the suburb is very family friendly. There are plenty of parks and you are only 10 minutes away from Cronulla beach.
Grab a delicious burger from Paul's Famous Burgers and walk around to the boat ramp to enjoy the best chicken salt chips with a peaceful outlook. There are lots of little cafes around and great local restaurants. Finesse Cafe makes incredible Thai food, I never order, I just ask for the special of the day and they never dissapoint.
Overall Sylvania offers great lifestyle. You are close to the beach and not too far from the city. Sylvania allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds.

"The best hidden allrounder of Sydney suburbs"

I have moved around Sydney a fair bit ( Bondi, Surry Hills, the North Shore) and this is by far the best Suburb I have lived in. It is green, with trees and water all around, heaps of kids friendly facilities and cafe lifestyle. Having young kids, I couldn't ask for more. The suburb is still very quiet and very Aussie but the locals are down to earth and easygoing.
I love the fact that it is close enough but not in the middle of Cronulla, the beaches, Hurstville and Brighton le sand.
It is still very relatively safe and sort of hidden off the beaten track.
I enjoy walking and the bush and waterways provide me with a great and safe backdrop.
In one word, this is Australian living as I imagined. I am German and love it that people tend to leave you alone, which was my initial fear coming to the Shire.
There are two sort of downers for me:
There are few whingeing old people, so I pity the young people because if you are planning to have a wild or loud party, this is not the suburb for you.
Off street parking can be hard in some streets, so make sure your property has one, but if you are prepared to walk 5 minutes there is plenty around, specially near the parks.

Great for

  • Kids friendly facilities, Green and lush
  • Close to beach
  • Close to shops
  • 24 Hour Kmart
  • Good Schooling options
  • Lots of sports oppertunities

Not great for

  • Parking, Not very multicultural

"A suburb with plenty of sport acitivies and trees"

Although Sylvania is a little distance to Sydney CBD, this suburb offers a green and clean environment with all amenities and plenty of restaurants. There are ample sport fields for those who love to play sports or just to watch. It is very close to Miranda Westfield which is being refurbished ($435m facelift) with more than 100 additional retailers including high quality fashion ones. Several beaches to choose from (within 10-minute drive)!

Great for

  • Good choices of restaurants
  • Green and clean suburb

"Wonderful for familiies"

Sylvania isnt the most exciting place on earth, but its a great place for families. Lost of good parks, good schools nearby and very convenient to major shopping centers. For people who like Asian foods, Hurstville is about a 10 minute drive away so not too far. Sylvania is the kind of suburb that you can take a walk with the family on a soft summers evening and stroll around, feeling comfortable. Being close to the coast also means quite refreshing sea breezes especially if you live near Sylvania Heights up on the hilly part. People are pretty friendly and it doesnt take too much effort to get to know your neighbours. Not a good place for those that have to commute long distances, but for me I love the fact that its far from the crowded inner burbs.

"Madeira St, Sylvania - not the best street to live"

Frustrations to living in Madeira St:

* The cul-de-sac has been redeveloped to include too many small complex developments making it impossible to find any street parking in an already very small street. With one large lot left to be developed, the chances of parking will be non-existent. Some residents never use the carparks provided for them, choosing to park on the street, thus taking up the already minimal amount of parking.

* You can not turn right into this street from the Princes Highway (coming from the bridge) - making it more than mildly annoying having to do a loop around/ or through the shopping centre EVERY time you want to go home!

* People - there is no community feel, everyone always has a sullen look on their face, no one says hello, everyone keeps to themselves, and if you come across a extra-extra "large" lady roaming the street, then watch out, she complains about everything and everyone, obviously because she just sits there waiting for something to complain about...

* Complex living - because there are so many complexes within this small street, it seems SOME people are obviously not used to unit/apartment/townhouse living - some need to learn that common areas are just that, people are coming and going, kids playing, making noise and having a 'childhood' is exactly what its intended to be used for!
If this is a gripe and you feel the constant need to complain, then move far far away where no one can hear you complain, because complex living is NOT for you!

Great for

  • Close to shops
  • Close to beach

Not great for

  • Traffic from Main Road
  • No community
  • Unfriendly, rude, racist

"Nice place but tooo far"

Sylvania Is nice although people there are alwasy in a rush. there is a congrigation of Housing NSW which should be spread out instead of next to the shopping centre. Crossing the bridge into the shire is also a gamble as its used as a gateway for trucks & everyone travelling to & from wollongong etc.

Houses & services are even pricey compared to sorrounding cities & suburbs. The suburb is split up in 2 by the princes hwy & the water. Sylvania is good if you work local & kids go to the local schools

"Sylvania - The Hidden Gem of Sydney"

Sylvania is a great place to rent... Perfectly located near the water and within driving distance to Cronulla beach. It's a bit of a central hub when it comes to shops and transport, with 2 major Westfields shopping centres nearby, and Southgate shopping centre within the suburb. There's also 24hr food outlets and a nice fitness first gym (one of the best in NSW). It's a good all-round suburb with a lot of offer, it doesn't really lack anything!
