Reviews of Tamarama, NSW

"Tamarama is a beachside suburb, eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales"

Tamarama is a beachside suburb, eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
Tamarama is 7 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Waverley Council.

It is affectionately nicknamed Glamarama (or Glamourama) by the locals, as it is a beach where wannabe trend setters come to sunbathe and swim or simply try to be seen.

Tamarama has a small ocean beach about 1 kilometre south of Bondi Beach and a couple of hundred metres north of Bronte Beach. The suburb is mostly residential and the beach and adjacent parklands have been popular places for recreation such as swimming, surfing, sunbaking and picnics for more than a century

Initially known as Dixon Bay by early European settlers, the name was changed to Tamarama in the 1800s

In 1887 Sydney's first coastal amusement park, and one of the earliest in Australia, opened at Tamarama. Named The Bondi Aquarium its greatest attraction was a plunging roller coaster that dived and twisted over the beach

Population 1450 ( as per census 2011 )

Sport and Recreation

Tamarama is represented in one of the most popular sporting competitions across Australia, the National Rugby League competition, by the local team the Sydney Roosters, officially the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club

Tamarama is in the middle of the "Bondi to Bronte Ocean Walk" which is the most popular coastal walking route in Australia. The beach and parkland form part of the exhibition space for Sculpture by the Sea, a free annual event in late spring and the most popular outdoor artistic exhibition in Australia.

"Tama - The place to be!"

One of the best areas in Sydney. In between Bronte and Bondi. Excellent public transport located very close by. Sculpture by the sea! Beautiful beaches, beautiful people. There is always something happening.

"Trendy Tamarama"

Tamarama is a beach side suburb of Sydney located 7 kilometres east of the CBD, in the local government area of Waverley Council and part of the Eastern Suburbs. It is bordered on the north by Bondi, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by Bronte and on the west by Bondi Junction. It has a population of about 1,500, 15% of whom are under 18 and 11% of whom are over 60.

It is quite a prestigious suburb with house prices averaging $2.5 million and units averaging $800,000. Rental prices are also reasonably high.

Tamarama Beach, nestled between Bondi and Bronte, has become very popular and one of the places to be “seen” in Sydney. The Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1906, one of the first in the world boasts that it has never had a fatality despite the fact that the beach has very dangerous rips in the surfing area. These rips are amongst the most dangerous on the east coast of Australia. There are parklands near the beach as well.
There is also a coastal walkway from Bondi to Bronte passing through Tamarama.

There are no schools in Tamarama so children need to travel to neighbouring suburbs to go to school. The area is serviced by an efficient bus service.

"Tamarama - Very trendy beach with dangerous surf."

Tamarama is a beachside suburb located in the east suburbs 7 kms from Sydney’s CBD. Tamarama is in between Bronte and the famous Bondi Beach. Once home to a large aquarium, Tamarama became a quiet almost forgotten beach until recent years when is has become very trendy with the ‘beautiful people’ atmosphere. The beach is a sandy strip with a backdrop of parklands, hills and gullies but don’t be deceived, the surf here can be very treacherous even on a calm day. It is one for experienced swimmers and surfers only. There are local shops nearby for drinks, ice creams and takeaway food. The area is basically residential with accommodation limited to Bondi and Bronte areas.
