Thornlie, WA 6108

Friendly people. Feel safe to live based on 5 years living in Thornlie. Diverse community is moving into the suburb which is good indication of suburb getting gentrified.

I notice lots of people mentioning West and East of Thornlie, I think that is very biased judgement. The West side has had newer houses only in small pockets closer to Canning Vale (circa 1980s - 1990s), the East Side originally had older houses (1960s - 1980s) however now the East has even more newer houses due to recent subdivisons and development where it is mostly occuring in the East of Thornlie.
I also see old comments labelling Maddington negatively, Maddington now when I drove past is all new houses and young established families moving there.
Ofcourse Thornlie is still heaps better than surrounding suburbs as it ticks it all, but now that I had seen Maddington as opposed to hearing about it, it is actually pretty decent suburb.

We moved to Thornlie a few years ago and can see ourselves living here for the next 20+ years. For a reasonable price we were able to buy close to the city (within 25 mins) with good public transport via the train which I catch every day to work and even better once the new Thornlie Cockburn Link is completed. There are lots of lovely parks in the suburb and the City of Gosnells has been doing lots of projects to upgrade facilities including the revamp of the Thornlie Leisureplex. Lots of good schools. A strong sense of community with events at the local footy club including food van and market stalls in summer, also good community organisations such as the Gosnells Toy LIbrary and Forest Lakes Family Center with playgroups and interest clubs. The block sizes are larger than most new developments giving us space for a big shed, pool and garden, the Aussie dream backyard!

Great area. Large blocks, good bang for your buck. Close to Public transport. Heaps of shops and parks nearby.

I live East of Spencer Road, and while I agree that the houses over this way are a little older and dated it's still a very safe and lovely area in which to live. The walk-paths along the river are splendid, and can safely be walked all hours of the day (I walk late-afternoon and there are always families with young children and dogs on leashes out for a stroll). Echoing the views of others who have posted here before me, there are plenty of older houses which have been demolished and rebuilt along Thornlie Ave, and an equal number of homes being renovated by young savvy types in neat little cul-de-sac's. There are some magnificent looking home on the banks of the Canning River (Jacqueline Drive, Glenbrook Road, Parkside Drive) although these are quite unaffordable nowadays. We live on Huggins Road and have never had any issues in the 13 years we've been there.

I moved in Thornlie a few years ago. My friends who lived near the Thornlie told me to buy west side of Spencer Rd of Thornlie,
avoid east part and near the train station. So I bought a house in the Regal Dr. And I am so happy. The street is beautiful, and quiet
I do not know very well about my neighbors but I can say that they are quiet, kind and friendly, I never had a long talk with them though.

Lovely older suburb. Like has previously been mentioned, lots of younger families buying in and renovating. Also lots of subdivision with newer homes getting built. 15 minutes drive from Perth, 25 minute train ride. Plenty of parks and walking paths, river just down road also. We live on Albrecht Place.

Recommend to anyone especially younger families. Prices have risen quite dramatically though compared with a couple of years ago, so a bit more expensive these days.

The first thing is that it is a very quiet suburb, at least on the older west side. It is more gentrified than neighbouring suburbs such as Maddington, Huntingdale, Southern River and Langford - which are to be avoided in any case. The best side of Thornlie is to the west of Spencer Road with side boundaries of Wharton and Hume Roads. Here you have vintage 1970's-era leafy Crestwood Estate, the concentric circled streets of Castle Glen, and the Sutherland Drive subdivision; and the newer housing on the Forest Lakes side of Murdoch Road which is more typical of the modern sterility of Canning Vale. There seems to be a lot of retired people in Thornlie obsessing over their lawns, and the state of their houses, and being typically pesky. But over time, with retirees and investors doing renovations, this had led to a slow and inexorable rise in Thornlie's stock. For younger couples or single people, there are no cafe strips, no hipster hangouts, no nightlife to speak of. Thornlie from that point of view can seem very dreary. But for a families with school age children, and grown-ups who want to live in a proper suburb with trees, it's a good choice.

Purchased a renovated home in 2015 along Jacqueline Drive opposite the open parkland. Lovely views of old trees growing alongside the Canning River. Big backyard (800square) and a playground over the road connected by foot paths for when the kids want to take the bikes out. Daughter started at Thornlie Primary School earlier this year (so far so good). Neighbours are friendly. Feels like we've been here forever. Jon

My wife and I moved to Thornlie in 2012 and picked up a neat & tidy 4 bed, 2 bathroom on a big block for far cheaper than Canning Vale (which we were originally looking at). We live East of Thornlie Drive near the Canning River (also East of Spencer Road). It's a beautiful green area with big blocks, heaps of open space and an abundance of long-term residents (mostly retired couples, as well as young families). We've renovated our home, and have noticed many others in the neighbourhood are doing the same. There is also a lot of subdivision occurring along Thornlie Drive presumably spurred along by the jump in home & land values. We shop at the Thornlie Square Shopping Centre which, although a little dated, is still quite nice. The Kebab shop is worth a visit, while there are also a few little restaurants & cafes for a quick snack. The butcher is great too. We've spent a lot of time at the swimming pool/gym/leisure-plex. We've never had any troubles or felt unsafe (even at the train station). Overall Thornlie is a nice & quiet place to live with excellent amenities (transport especially).

Having lived in Thornlie for over 10 years, the changes have been pretty good. Great cycling lanes from Thornlie to the CBD along the Canning River, large blocks and you are close enough to so many amenities in Cannington, Canning Vale and Forrest Lakes. Lots of open spaces and parks and only 20 mins into the CBD by car. The Thornlie Train Station is good and a lot safer than Kenwick at night, though as with most public transport in Perth - they could increase the frequency of services. A taxi from Northbridge to Thornlie cost between $40 - $50 dollars.

People say "hello" and "good morning" to you and there is a good mix of age ranges around. You also need to make an effort too, but where I am there is a good sense of community.

There are dodgy people in every area, and Thornlie is no different. I have never been broken into, but know people who have. I still feel safe in Thornlie, but there are parts (like anywhere) where people don't look after their properties or each other.

There is no night life in Thornlie, but you aren't that far from the CBD that it is a problem.

All in all a great place to live.

Thornlie is a heaven for those looking for the essentials such as train service, bus service, fast foods and shopping centres. If you are watchful you can avoid burglary and house break ins. Speeding is a problem here. Schools are not so bad. In brief Thornlie is a fast growing town with the attitude of a busy city.

We're been living here 2 years and renovating our house. We live in the original Thornlie when it was first built and we have some excellent neighbours. Thornlie Square is short walk, as is the train station and Spencer Village. We're a short drive to Cannington, Maddington, Armadale shopping precincts. I have a choice of commuting to work either from Thornlie or Kenwick train stations.

The only negative would be the train stations at night.

The main reasons for buying in the area was getting a house on a large block within 20kms of the city without the huge price tag and for less than $350,000 and it's an established suburb and not a dustbowl. I have access to ADSL2+, walking to shops and public transport. I didn't have to move to the outter edge of the city to have an affordable mortgage.

thornlie often gets a bad rap, because of the east side of spencer road, but as long as you are buying west of spencer road closer to forest lakes it's actually really nice. close to schools, shopping centres and it's own train line to the city thornlie is one of the few places in perth you can buy a 600sqrm+ block with a 3x1 for $350k without the surrounding street looking like a ghetto.
avoid buying along yale road or spencer road. simply don't do it if you want to live there it's not worth it. there's also a fair amount of homes west around but from experience you can usually pick the bad ones - lots of homes west out there are just grandma and grandpa. i lived in thornlie for 4 years and never had a problem. you do get a little aircraft noise but it never bothered me and i'm a light sleeper, buying back further to forest lakes will almost eliminate the aircraft noise.

Coming from forest lakes this area of thornlie is surrounded by parks and lakes with people walking their dogs and kids to school. Generally a great safe place to live, however the other side of Thornlie can be at times very average. Surrounding suburbs of Maddington and Gosnells dont feel safe at times and wouldn't walk around by yourself at night especially weekends. However forest lakes feels constantly safe day and night with lots of ovals and friendly smiles. Location is good depending on what you want to be near. Freeway is only 20 minutes away and cannington westfield is also 20 minutes. A lot of new developed small properties popping up, becoming quite a developed area with a lot of choices for schools. Lived here my whole life and though surrounding suburbs can be unsafe as well as certain areas of thornlie, forest lakes is well looked after and a beautiful place to live. Especially for families.

Thornlie is located 16km from the Perth CBD and has come a long way since its historical roots as an experimental farm area, having grown into the thriving community we know it today. It’s family affordable living with a solid infrastructure of shopping centres at Forest Lakes, Thornlie Square and Spencer Village all incorporating supermarkets, boutique shops and pharmacies; recreational facilities at Tom Bateman Sporting Complex, Gosnells Leisure World (swimming & gymnasium), skate park, varied sporting clubs, parklands and cycle path along the Canning River; community services such as the Library and Don Russell Performing Arts Theatre; as well as many restaurants and takeaway outlets, taverns, accommodation, medical centres and service stations. There are state and private schools for primary and secondary education as well as the Swan TAFE campus. Public transport covers the suburb with bus and train routes to the Perth CBD , as well as easy access to both Roe and Tonkin Highways. Thornlie comprises older and newer areas catering for first home buyers or investors, as well as those upgrading, with sought after estates such as Crestwood, Castle Glen, Forest Lakes and Forest Rise.

I live in Castle Glen Estate at Galland Court. Quiet , Peaceful and with ample space for plant ,tree and children and even my church gathering.
