Reviews of Tugun, QLD

"Underrated"

Have recently moved to Tugun after months of looking on the Gold Coast. I’d been deterred from looking her due to the flight path but have found it not to be all that bad. Those worried (like I was) just need to look at the actual flight path and stay clear of homes directly in it (if noise bothers you).

The local cafes and restaurants are pretty good, some of the bars are doing well with good wineS and beers to choose from. The pub needs to update the menu and beer list but otherwise it’s ok as well. You have plenty to choose from as well which I’ve come to enjoy.

It’s nice down at the beach and a great cycleway now makes it great for recreational stuff. Main road bottlenecks can be a little bit of a pain and council needs to put a pedestrian overpass/underpass over Gold Coast Highway to make it safer as lots of people attempt the jay walk dangerously.

Can’t comment on schools but believe it’s well connected with transport and cycle ways.

Overall I’m happy to be in Tugun away from the tacky high rises and have found a strong community spirit locally.

Couple of tips for newbies.

Do shop at the friendly grocer
Do check out the local bars and restaurants
Don’t worry too much about the planes unless you sleep from 7am to 7pm.
Do get a bike and enjoy the cycleways
Do check out the bowling club for meal deals

In summary, really happy to be in Tugun!

"Tugun - The Hidden Gem"

We love Tugun. We spent 10 years living in Palm Beach/Currumbin and had no idea that the Tugun we now know and love even existed.

When we decided to sell in Palm Beach 3 years ago, we wandered down further south and decided to check out what was hidden up the road from Hungry Jacks. That decision changed our lives.

WOW!

We always thought that living in Tugun would mean flight path, dump, hospital etc. We had no idea that the 'other part' of Tugun even existed.

We fell in love with a house on Mirreen Drive and wasted no time making it ours. Contrary to popular belief, we experience virtually no plane noise at all. The odd day you do get noise, but no more than we had at Third Ave in Palm Beach. People whinge about the desal plant - unless you live within the grounds of the plant, you don't know that it's there. The only impact the dump has on us is completely positive. We don't have to drive very far when we've finished the pruning - and need we say more if you purchase in the area and decide to renovate as we have.

The benefits of living in Tugun are endless. Need I point out the beautiful, easily and quickly accessed beachfront that is pretty much never crowded - even at the height of the summer holidays. We have 3 sets of neighbours that are wonderful - something that we didn't experience in either Palm Beach or Currumbin. We have very quick access to either north or south. The local shopping centre provides virtually everything you need for your day-to-day needs. If you are a walker, then Tugun is definitely the place for you. There is a conservation park to walk through, plus multiple walking tracks. The streets are quiet enough to make them perfectly safe to walk in at any time of day. You can choose from hills or flats.

If you are considering purchasing in Tugun, don't hesitate, JUST DO IT !!!

In what way does the desal plant effect you? Do you live near it?

Taylor77

This coming from someone who thinks Toowong is excellent, hahaha, that place is full of freaks & weirdos!!!! Tugun & Burleigh are AMAZING Gold Coast suburbs, you've obviously got no idea at all Nashtu.

You must live in Tugun Street and must go to bed mighty early to be bothered by the 6 small planes that go over after around 7 pm. The desal plant? I live in the closest street to the plant and and it just looks like a big (granted, ugly) warehouse. Anyone who lives in Tugun is blessed with easy access to beautiful beaches, convenient access to shopping, the M1 to Brisbane, Northern NSW, the Airport, the rest of the GC and more open space than anywhere else I have seen on the GC.

view from the beach isn't what it used to be? The water looks the same to me as it did 40 odd years ago.

A little on the noisy side. You must be from the country.......The view from the beach isn't what it used to be? Comment doesn't make sense. You could have said possibly the cleanest beach in the world. Now that i would have agreed with.

"Great place for a holiday"

This is a great place for a holiday, or to retire. I think I prefer Currumbin, but that could just be because of the holidays I enjoyed there as a child. Tugun has really come along. It used to be out of the way, but not any longer. Close to the beach, the Gold Coast and Northern NSW, this is a wonderful place.

"Ideal location"

My family & I have lived in the local area for over 6 years now & just love it. The beaches here are in a league of there own with overcrowding never a problem & the new pathway up the Southern coastline makes for a great walk. Tugun's convenience was another big drawcard for us with the airport, shops, schools & now university only 5 or so minutes away. As for eating out one is spoiled for choice with a great selection of restaurants in the town itself & with Coolangatta/Kirra around the corner there's much to choose from. The people are friendly attaining a real sense of community which is quite rare to come by these days & you are only minutes away from the heart of the Gold Coast what more could you want really?!

"Where the Mountains Meet the Sea."

Nowhere else on the Gold Coast will you get the sense of community that there is in Tugun. It has evolved over about 100 years from a farming area and railway stop with just a few holiday homes to a modern and progressive community catering for the needs of all age groups.

Whether you are young and single after your first flat to rent, a young family or retiree wanting to be close to the beach, or a successful business person trying to "live the dream" and have a home overlooking the beach, you're very likely to find something to suit your needs.

There are very few places on the Gold Coast where you find the lush green of the hills and mountains come so close to the ocean. Currumbin Creek and wildlife sanctuary are 5 minutes down the road.

The airport is five minutes drive, and direct access to the M1 is only a couple of minutes away.

Tugun Surf Life Saving Club is right on the beach where you can swim in safety during patrol times and have a meal and a drink with the family. The Bowls club is recognised well throughout Australia especially with winter visitors from southern states.

The shopping village offers every imaginable service and product range, all in a relaxed family friendly way. Schools are only minutes away at Currumbin. The John Flynn Hospital is one of Australia's most respected private hospitals and sits at the back of Tugun.

Tugun. The complete beachside lifestyle you have been looking for.

Totally agree JT68. I can't believe more people don't know what a gem Tugun is. We love to take family walks and have so many choices - nature reserve, beach, hills, flats. Walk to shops, beach, restaurants, and extremely easy north/south access.

For those who trash it because of noise, we came from Palm Beach where we were directly under the flight turning path. We experienced much more noise there than we do in Tugun. If you choose to live directly underneath the flight path, then you must expect plane noise, that's just common sense - but if you choose a property just a little further west into Tugun/Tugun Heights, you won't regret it. As for the desal plant, if you didn't drive past it on the way to the dump, you wouldn't know it was there.

It really is a hidden gem and we love it.

I love Tugun. A friend of mine has bought a townhouse on Inland drive and althought we get noise from planes every half an hour or so it only lasts 20 seconds. I live in Sydney and my unit faces william street which is quite noisy every day of the week especially on saturdays as is very close to Kings Cross. Tugun has a beautifull beach which is never crowded like the Gold Coast, the people are friendly they have said hello to me a few times a thing Sydney lacks completely. Its clean and quiet, has a relaxing lifestyle and I love coming here for a couple of weeks to get out of the rat race Sydney is. The neighbours in our complex are really nice down to earth people. Even when the shops are a bit far to walk I have been walking to them and actually enjoyed it as it is flat. Is without a doubt one of the best places to live in the Gold Coast area.

My son and I are thinking of relocating to Gold Coast from Adelaide. Looking at Tugun or Bruleigh Waters. It is going to be a really important decision but extremely hard one as don't have too much knowledge about the arears
My son is in year 8 now so finding good school will be the first priority when making decision.

charlesm4

its a good move suburbs south of broadbeach are not as rough or run down not that there aren't any of the usual problems aussie suburbs have it dosnt seem as prevalent and a great clean outdoor lifestyle for any age

zoet1

hey guys, if youre planning to have a baby soon would the planes be an issue? first baby so no idea how much outside noise impacts them! cheers

JT68
JT68

zoet1 if you live to the west of the flight path you will hardly hear the noise. Some people put secondary glazing which is a second set of sliding windows inside the main ones in a baby's room or anyone's room if it bothers them. My son was never bothered by it as a baby and we lived right under the path then. Now he is almost grown up he wants to be a pilot.

zoet1

thanks for replying JT! if its a rental I suppose it will be harder to make adjustments to the house, but good to know it shouldn't really be a factor in choosing the home .. cheers
