Reviews of Uralla, NSW

"Annoying Dogs and Good Pubs"

Uralla is 1 out of 7 towns I've lived in, and I'd say this is one of the better ones. The scenery is nice, locals are freindly, no one uses the parks so you have it all to yourself. The supposedly fresh food from the local SPAR is rarely fresh, that's a hit and miss. It's best to do your grocery shopping at Armidale which is conveiniently close.

The main con to Uralla, I'd say is the dogs. Uralla council needs to have tighter regulations on the ownership of pets. It's pretty bad when 2/3 of the streets will have an annoying barking dog. You will often see dogs wandering outside of the owners yard, so watch out when driving. The general attitude of the locals is to shrudge their shoulders and continue on.

No one seems to get repremended for having an out of control dog, to the point where a pet owner could be walking a dog on a leash that bites pedestrians walking pass, and that person -plus dog - will be able to get away with it (talking from personal experience).

The best part of Uralla I'd say is that it has a brewery. The two pubs are nice as well, they serve nice food. All the other restraunts are not much to talk about.

"Friendly, safe and a great place to grow up"

I grew up in Uralla and had a great childhood. It's one of those few places left where kids can still safely ride their bikes around all day and fish for Yabbies in streams. I didn't go to school there - opting for the greater variety in terms of Education that near by Armidale has to offer. (And i think mum liked the 40 minute delay from the time the bell rang to us getting off the bus).

I go back all the time and the only thing that has changed is the number and variety of shops in the main street - which seems to have improved.

I must say though, if Armidale were not there, this little town would not be so thriving. Driving up and back does get irritating, but considering the peace and quiet and distance from junk food outlet, this was and still is a fantastic place to live.

Great for

  • Friendly
  • Safe
  • Quiet

Not great for

  • Lack of social entertainment facilities
  • Driving to Armidale and back

"A small town - ideally located within everyone's price range"

I moved to Uralla in 1995 and left in 2005 due to work commitments. It's a quiet place, where the locals are all friendly, and it is less than 20 minutes away from Armidale where I worked. My wife and I raised our family of 3 there, with few social problems impinging upon their lives.
Being on the New England highway there is not as much traffic as on the Pacific, and getting anywhere is an easy, if sometimes long, drive.
Those people looking for a larger centre for shopping or entertainment can go south to Tamworth, about an hour away.
Plenty of history and plenty to see and do, with blocks of land $50k cheaper than Armidale and twice the size.
