North Arm Road

"Remote subtropical paradise!"

Definitely a rural remote area, the first 10km is bitumen then dirt road up the far end (I assume this is what the previous review meant by 'goat track' - the condition of the road varies depending on the weather patterns in between periodic council gradings). North Arm Rd follows the path of the Nambucca River (Nambucca means crooked river) so most properties have creek access with gorgeous swimming spots. Beautiful Australian landscapes of paddocks and eucalypt-covered hills all along North Arm Road. Up the end, 'Girralong' is a series of valleys in the bottom of the hills, with lush pockets of rainforest along rocky river beds. Bowraville is the nearest town, with supermarket, post office, bank, pubs, retro restored cinema (which has held performaces by concert pianist Simon Tedeschi, as well as local plays and musicians and indie and Australian movie screenings), a Belgian chocolatier and Moroccan cafe.

Nambucca Heads and Macksville are not far away for shopping, restaurants, cafes and pubs, and Coffs Harbour is the nearest airport and major shopping mall. Nambucca, Valla, Scotts Head and Grassy Head are great local beaches and surf spots.

Many residents are former professionals, retirees, families and avid surfers who get used to a 20min drive to town. It is part of the lifestyle. Living in such a remote and unpopulated area creates a sense of community.

Paradise.

Valla Beach

"Beautiful beach suburb"

Gorgeous little beach community just outside Nambucca Heads. Has produced some world class surfers. Has a local pub, decent sized blocks of land. Amazing remote beaches. Restaurants, cafes, cinema, more pubs and shopping centre in Nambucca town and at the Plaza. A great area for families.

Great for

  • Peaceful, beautiful beach community
  • Great surf breaks
  • Close to Nambucca Heads and not far from Coffs Harbour either

Not great for

  • Like all rural/remote areas, there isn't a lot of public transport but there are buses
  • Gets busier with tourists in summer, which could be a pro for some!
