Mount Barker is great for families as there are a number of reserves dotted around and the wetlands, and most important good schools. Good for recreational activities, gyms, golf, tennis, swimming, bowls. People in the local community are very freindly. Nightlife is limited to a few pubs/places to eat and a good cinema; although Handorf is a very short drive away for a better choice of restaurants.
