Viveash

"Secluded, desirable, riverside location."

Viveash is a secluded suburb 'behind' Woodbridge and Midland, near Morrison Rd and grt Northern Hwy. Its main feature is that it is positioned right on the river with walking trails and grassland easily accessed for walking and as a nice softening touch in an urban area. The grassy reserves, like Reg Bond Reserve, are a major part of the area and perhaps take up more space than the housing allocation. If you dogs wanting a good run or feel the desire to kick a football then this is the place to go! Major features of the area are the Swam Districts Hospital and the Midland Brickworks. The access to schools is good with a number of private schools in the area and the local public schools. The Midland train station is minutes away as is the Midland Gate and main shopping centres. The land was apparently developed by the Midland Brickworks in 1967 and called Viveash in 1968 after a Dr Samuel Waterman Viveash who was an early landholder in the area after arriving in the Swan River Colony in 1838. There is currently a mix of old and new housing with recent redevelopment and the area is home to a mix of families, couple and singles.

Hovea

"Surrounded by natural bushland!"

Hovea is in the Shire of Mundaring and is bound on all three sides by some form of natural bushland or heritage features, such as Heritage Railways. On one side is Glen Forest and another has the natural environment of John Forest NP on the western boundary. Most of the land in the area is mid priced acreages that provide residents with a lifestyle choice. It was originally called Park View in 1912, but due to confusion with the names of Bellevue and Swan View, the name was changed to Hovea. Hovea was chosen after a small purple native flower in the area of the same name. The population is around 650 people and the nearest shopping area is Midland and schools are in Midland and nearby Mundaring.

Great for

  • A delightful bush environment.

Alfred Cove

"Almost on the river!"

Alfred Cove is one of those suburbs that I feel just missed out on greatness! It sits bordering Canning Hwy - so there is not the feeling of being riverside like some of the other surrounding areas. It doesn't take much to cross the very busy main road and get over to the green space, but it ins't quite the feeling of living in that space. The streets are all well maintained with people having renovated to high quality. Shopping and schools are all good as is access to areas like Fremantle and eating out. Can't complain - it is a pretty good spot.

Great for

  • Access to everything!

Garden Island

"Navy access only!"

Garden Island lies off the WA coast, much as Rottenst Island and Penguin Island do - all are limestone based with a sandy top surface, and were once connected to the mainland. In the past this Island was accessible to the public of Perth. However, access has been gradually reduced over the years by the development of the Island as the Naval Base for Western Australia. Several years ago the public was still able to visit during the day, however access was eventually ceased completely. Now, it is a rare occassion that the Base is ''open to the public'' for a demonstration or special event. Unfortunately, in my opinion a great resource for the WA public (as Rottenst is) has been claimed by the government. The island has had a history of military use, with gun batteries being established during WWII but was also a place for holiday homes after WWI. After ongoing use, such as for special forces training, the island became available for holiday homes again. However, now it has no such purpose! The advantage of restricting public access has been the work the navy has done to preserve the natural environment and it is one place where several threatended species are able to live in relative safety. This is an informational review only - except for my 'opininon' above!

Great for

  • Native wildlife protection on the island.

Not great for

  • No public access.

Herne Hill

"Rural living and vineyards with wide open spaces!"

Herne Hill is a bit out of Perth, but not too far from Midland - so there is not a feeling of isolation. In winter it is lovely and green, with views to the hills. It is a great spot for horses and many properties are set up with stables and dressage 'arenas' for children to practice their hobby. Most properties are quite large but there is a section of smaller ''suburban'' houses which are quite sought after. There is not a great deal of services in terms of doctors and the like - you need to head to Midland for all that or the suburbs on the way to there. But there is a primary school, which is handy to save travelling for little kids. If you are looking for a bit of country while still being close to the city - Herne Hill is your place.

Great for

  • Lovely and green.

Not great for

  • Distance to services.

Ashby

"A regular new suburb."

I visit friends in this suburb regularly and I have seen it develop quickly over the last few years. It is, as I state in the title - a regualr new suburb. To me it is nice and tidy - that is because the houses are packed so tightly together that no one plants a tree to drop a leaf or to add anything that could be untidy. There is no character here although the properties are of a high standard. My friends live in the centre bit, near The Circle and the houses are packed in like sardines. I'm not sure what would make this suburb stand out over any others. It isn't especially close to anything, although Joondalup is just around the corner for shopping.

Unfortunately, your critique must only be related to that new part of Ashby locarted near the Ashby Pub. As for the Centre bit . . . Im not quite sure to where you refer. Yes, Ashby is a newly expanded suburb and has its fair share of smaller three bedroom residences. But then so does the adjacent suburb of Tapping. Basically, from your assessment Id deduce that Ashby would have about the same unredeeming features as Tapping or Carramar which are only two minutes away. Ashby also has many four bedroom two bathroom family homes set on larger plots measuring over 600sqm, and has a much larger population of families than single. But you'd know that if you lived there. . . Right.

Chilham Place

"Quiet well kept street."

I lived here for a while and found it to be a nice street with not too much activity. The people were nice if you happened to meet on the way out and mostly the gardens were neat and tidy. As a shiftworker, I didn't get out to much during the day but it suited me. It was a quick drive to the shops and not too far to the railway station either. I often walked to the nearby oval and walked the dogs at all hours and never felt a safety risk.

Great for

  • Neat and tidy.
  • Close to shops.
