Redbank Plains

"A nice suburb with an obsolete reputation."

After living in Upper Mt Gravatt for the last two and a half years I was more or less used to loud traffic, hoons, car accidents, screaming domestic neighbours and sirens tearing up and down the streets at all hours. After moving to RBP I couldn't believe how peaceful and quiet it was, given what I had been prevously told about it. I live in a side street just off the infamous Henty Drive and I haven't heard a single hoon even on weekends, our neighbours are extremely friendly and we've had no trouble with keeping our place secure. There's plenty of options for grocery shopping which is open quite late, though eating out is pretty limited apart from fast food. Almost every house in the area is set up with ultra fast NBN lines, so it's a great place if you're a heavy internet user. The lots are quite small, that doesn't bother me as I don't make use of big yards but to each his own. The houses themselves are nice quality and you can't argue with the prices.

The only downsides I can really see are that there isn't much in the way of council maintenance of public areas, it can get quite dirty in some places and street lighting is very dim and sparse at night. Public transport can also be a pain as the buses seem to shut down quite early, it definitely feels like a suburb for people with cars.

All in all I'm happy with the place, it's been one of the most surprisingly pleasant suburbs I've ever lived in.

Great for

  • Fibre to the home NBN internet (100mbit) across entire suburb
  • Walk to local shopping centres, short drive to Orion Shopping Centre
  • Lots of bargains available with houses under 300k
  • Parks and kids play areas

Not great for

  • Make sure any alarm system you get is NBN compatible
  • Council needs to be called to mow council strips
  • Public Transport is ordinary after 5pm on a weekend/public holiday

Who lives here?

  • Professionals
  • Singles
  • Families with kids
  • Retirees
  • LGBT+
  • Hipsters
  • Students
