Karana Downs

"Riverside, semi-rural paradise."

Karana Downs is so great for families, we have a fantastic little primary school and heaps of healthy activities for all. When I lived in the city, I used to notice the local teenagers skipping school to hang out at the train stations taking drugs. In Karana Downs, one still sees the very occasional teenager roaming the streets - with a fishing rod and a smile on their face! They are all too happy hanging out in their own or their friends backyard pools, canoing and fishing, or just hanging out in their big backyards, to get into trouble.

The residents are for the most part very house proud and community minded. There are girl guide and scout groups and heaps of sports clubs, including water sports. The rare exception to neighborly friendship is (as everywhere) renting families who can bring annoyances like unruly dogs, don't want to mow the large blocks, and who often complain about some of the joys of rural living like your heritage chickens before moving on to the next suburb and so on. So I would recommend that anyone thinking of buying here find out what the rental status of neighbouring houses is and if one is rented out, ask the neighbours what type of residents the landlords have installed to date. If you are thinking of renting here, don't move in and then complain about the existing homeowners who have invested in the neighbourhood - part of the reason we all love it out here is that if we can let our kids scream in a pool, or feed the wild parrots and water birds, have big family parties in our back yards, listen to music on our verandahs, or let our chickens free range. If you want complete quiet, or you object to wildlife or chickens entering your property, pick another less family friendly suburb or choose a rental on a small block rather than a large one. Having said that though, there is usually great separation between blocks so you'd have to be pretty sensitive for any noise levels in Karana Downs to disturb you.

Great for

  • Lots of wildlife and water birds.
  • Ideal old fashioned suburb to bring up kids.
  • Just a short drive from Karalee and Ipswich shops, which are cheaper than Brisbane.
  • Great for families
  • Relaxed lifestyle living

Not great for

  • Developers are slowly trying to change the character of this semi-rural suburb with small blocks.
  • Public transport is non existent.

Who lives here?

  • Professionals
  • Families with kids
  • LGBT+
  • Hipsters
  • Country Lovers
  • Trendy & Stylish

That is a bit of a harsh comment about renting.... not all renters are what you describe, actually.... MOST are not...I am a renter, I have a fantastic history of being a great tennant, I am a worker, a student, and have a family.....maybe reconsider your judgemental attitude and how you are singling out people like that. Its not ok seriously.

WOW! What a stereotype about renters!
What a slap in the face.
Our beautiful family have been renting all our lives, and we are very house proud, and are very involved in the community.
A lot of our friends also rent, and NONE are as you describe. Just because we rent we are not second class citizens. I feel sorry for you that you can be so naive and harsh to others in your community.

Hi Sarah...i was commenting on the article, not responding to another comment...i also agree with jaycee, if you read my comment properly you would have discovered that i was also upset to read a negative stereotype against renters.

yes agreed - I find many home owners quite onerous considering that they are basing their judgemental attitudes towards renters on what ? Lack of income or is it because you envy the freedom that renting brings - I have had a bit of both worlds - owning and renting and renting is by far the better option for giving you freedom and even testing out a neighbourhood - so hear hear : down with judgemental small-minded house-owners - who cares if you have a zillion dollars owing to the bank?

Usually it's the homeowners complaining about renters being noisy But you are complaining because renters don't like you being noisy haha I'm sure a lot of home owners in Karana Downs don't want to listen to your parties and music too often either, as most people like to be able to go home and enjoy some peace ! and I presume they like Karana Downs because it is quiet otherwise they'd live somewhere closer in but I could be wrong.
