Port Macquarie

"Five minutes to everywhere"

Been living here for five years. Find driving from one destination to another is only five to ten minutes drive. There are a lot of options for schools, mostly catholic schools. The place can get busy at Christmas time with a lot of traffic. Not much option for shopping, you do have two "major" shopping centres. The place has beautiful beaches and clean. Not much graffiti which is nice. There are more medical facilities now then there was a few years ago. You do have to be careful of ticks on your animals. The parking can be a pain especially during summer. The hospital is getting a much needed renovation. There are a few different eat outs but not a great deal to choose from. The cost of living can be expensive. There are a lot of public buses all around town and to Wauchope to the railway station. Not much for young adults, as in job wise.

Great for

  • Beaches
  • Schools
  • Walking Locations
  • Gym & Fitness
  • Public Transport
  • Clean & Green

Not great for

  • Nightlife
  • Internet Access
  • Visiting Bands
  • Pest free
  • Shopping Options
  • Cost of living

Who lives here?

  • Families with kids
  • Retirees
  • Tourists
  • Beach Lovers

Thanks for the insights Kerrie - I am thinking of relocating my family there at the end of next year. We've moved around a lot - so I hope this is the last time and that Port Macquarie is the fit I am looking for.

Hi Tracie,
Have you and your family moved there yet? How are you finding it? I am hoping to move there in 2017 with my family.
Thanks

Hi Kath

Ended up moving last December - was offered a job here.

My youngest two are at (Catholic) school and child care at Wauchope - both great and i'm very happy with the standards and care.

Lifestyle is lovely. Winter is warmer than in South Australia. Summer has lovely tropical rains to keep everything green.

Midway between Brisbane and Sydney - so lots of options. Shopping is average (which is a good thing for me) .... so trips to Newcastle and Sydney are used to stock up on various bits and pieces.

There's a new university under construction which will have a flow on effect for employment and I'd say the town is on the brink of some significant growth.

Real estate is affordable - building a bit pricey. Kids' sports are fairly good and accessible ... and people are largely pleasant.

Parking over summer in town is terrible - however it's easy to walk around the CBD as its not miles long!! Beaches are beautiful - but watch out for the jellyfish.

Tics - my son had one embed itself into his neck on our first day here. Make sure your kids wear hats out and be careful around trees.
