Wanstead Street

"Avoid - bad neighbourhood."

Along with the Crawley Street area, the Wanstead Street neighbourhood is considered one of the bad parts of Warrnambool. It's a massive, poorly maintained broadacre Housing Commission estate.

Wandong

"A nice town and yet..."

...I live in Broadford, about 15 minutes up the road, and today I decided to take my dog for a walk around Wandong. My god! Outside of the Northern Territory, I have never seen so many houses in one town guarded by aggressive dogs! Pretty much every house had one and not all of them were behind fences.... it was quite a traumatic experience for both me and my blue heeler! Luckily a vet bill was avoided. Suffice to say if you have a phobia of dogs, this is not the town to move to.
Aside from the possible dangers resulting from locals breeding aggressive dogs that apparently are allowed to roam the streets, I think the fact the pretty much every house has a dog says a lot about the town. Certainly in the Northern Territory, most houses have guard dogs because of the high crime rate. I can only think that the same thing must be the case in Wandong. Either that or there is a particularly virulent strain of machismo that's infected the local male populace - though I have to admit the people there seem friendly enough.
At the very least, if you move to Wandong you can be assured that you will end up with at least one neighbour who has a dog that barks a lot, which of course can be extremely annoying!

Broadford

"Lovely town - but a bit unfriendly"

I moved here about a year ago and commute to Melbourne for work each day. I really like living here - it's s very pretty town with lots of trees and surrounded by hills. Unfortunately I have to say that it's just a little bit too far from Melbourne, so I'm considering moving again. The commute in the morning is ok, but in the afternoon, when you just want to get home, it's a bit of a drag. I work at Melb Uni and it takes about 1.5 hours door-to-door using the train and a bit less in the car. The V/Line train is great - runs at least once an hour, seven days a week, and it's clean, comfortable and good value for money. Also close to the Hume Freeway, but most of the town is far enough away that you can't hear the traffic, except on very still nights.

Although my neighbours are nice, if I have one criticism of the town itself, I would say that it's not as friendly as other country towns I've lived in or visited. Even in nearby Seymour and Kilmore, the people seem to be a lot friendlier. But I still think I prefer Broadford, because it's a much more attractive and peaceful town.
