Avondale Road

"A family-friendly street"

Our little street, while can occassionally be a little busy with school traffic, is generally quiet, peaceful and family friendly. We enjoy a good relationship with our neighbours while not feeling like everyone knows our business. I feel safe in my home when my Husband is away, and have always found our street to be reasonably crime-free. We are easy walking distance to the local shops, banks, chemists and schools. We are only a short drive from the bigger shopping precincts. We enjoy the use of the best parks and wildlife reserves in the area, all of which are well maintained by council. I would encourage anyone with a friendly family outlook to join us here! It's a great place to raise my family.

Great for

  • Wide clean street
  • Excellent access to local shops, schools and amenities
  • Great neighbours

Not great for

  • Not enough parking
  • Not enough trees to park under
  • Walkers often leave litter and dog poo on the foot path!

Grand Junction Road

"Main Road, but excellent position!"

Great position to get where you want in Adelaide. Not too far from the city, but far enough out so that you don't get all the congestive traffic. Pretty safe, and neighbours that don't nose around. Great schools, and located close enough to hospitals for those little emergencies that crop up when you have kids!

Despite being a main road, the night time traffic is not too bad! Access onto the road is ok as it is a 4 lane road, meaning you can always get in if you're patient. The road is well lit, creating extra security for the home. Overall, if you're in the right home, this road is not a bad place to live.

Avondale Road

"Good family area"

Avondale Rd is one of those streets that gets used as a short cut between Regent st and Hobart Rd. Despite this, traffic is not tto bad, and drivers are generally mindfull fo local foot traffic. We have found this to be a friendly, quietly community minded street with pleasant neighbours who tend to keep to themselves unless specifically approached. There doesn't appear to be much crime, although sometimes people coming home after a big night at the pub walk past and cause a bit of a rucous.

There are quiet a few homes with dogs, who all like to have the odd chat to each other. However, at night, they seem to sleep well.... traffic is minimal at night, and I have little fear of crime. Our car is parked on the street most of the time and has not yet been damaged or stolen.

We live very close to great parks, the pool, and nice caffes. The local shops are useful for a quick shop, and the local library is a nice place to visit with young children for a good story and craft time. We have found most people reasonably friendly, however there is the odd snob who won't talk to you on the way past. You can walk anywhere you wish (it's nice and flat), and it's a quick drive to great shopping centers, the Uni, the hospitals and the beach. We have an ambulance and fire station, 2 chemists, 1 newsagent, 2 pubs, 1 club/gym (Wests), 2 great schools and several specialty shops including 3 good butchers, a green grocers, and IGA and a couple of bakeries. So you don't have to leave the neighbourhood if you don't want to! And you can walk EVERYWHERE!

We love it here, and we hope to stay for years to come!

Charles Street

"Quiet Family Friendly Street"

A beautiful street to live in, that is quiet, safe and friendly. Situated near local schools, a short drive to the best shopping centers in the area and only minutes from major hospital facilities. Although not on a major bus line, the bus stop is only a short (if a bit hilly) wallk. If it's the rail that you enjoy, we are only a short walk from Cardiff Railway station, which also has a parking lot if you are picking someone up. Local shops are good, and the area is green. The only drawback with Charles St is that it is very hilly, and unless you are very fit, a quick walk is not very quick, and not particularly easy (especially with a pram!). The neighbours are quiet and easy to live next to, are considerate, and not nosey. There is very little through traffic, most cars are local traffic only, and they generally drive at around the 40km/hr level. Charles St is a quiet street, well suited to young families with cars, who wish to keep to themselves while having the benefit of a pleasant community, or retirerees you want to downsize, but still have a nice garden.

Great for

  • Quiet, local traffic only
  • Green, good breezes in summer
  • Close to public transport

Not great for

  • Hilly

New Lambton

"Great Family Neighbourhood"

We have lived here for nearly 2 years and have found that New Lambton has lived up to our expectations. It is an easy walk almost anywhere (school, shops, caffe etc), A quick drive to major shopping centres, close to major hospitals and the Uni, and it has excellent schools. We have found the majority of people friendly and accommodating, although some can be a bit snobby.

Even though we live on a semi-busy street, traffic is manageable and drivers are conscious of foot traffic. Despite being close to several pubs and clubs, the night time is rarely disturbed by noise, and there has apparently not been a robbery in our area in years.

Being closer to the CBD, the area is naturally busier than suburbs further out. However, public transport is much better, and there are more walkers as there are more parks and caffes to go to. Our neighbours are pleasant, but don't "live in your pocket". Generally, they have respect for others property and privacy. However, as not all houses have off street parking, on street parking can be at a premium, even outside our own home! Some neighbours are share houses, and so have several cars, that all need parking spaces!

We have wanted to live in New Lambton for several years. It's not that our old neighbourhood was bad (opposite in fact, Cardiff was a great place to live), and more that we wanted to be closer to town, have more options to walk to and we wanted to have access to particular schools. Also, property values are better here.... our home has already gone up by $40,000! So we are very happy with our decision to buy in New Lambton, and look forward to being here for many years to come!

Great for

  • Wonderful social activities for families at local parks
  • Good variety of local shops, banks and cafes
  • Great schools
  • Low crime
  • Friendly and community minded

Not great for

  • Not enough street lighting
  • A lot of people have more than 2 cars per family, reducing street parking
  • Not enough trees on the streets to park under
