Lenah Valley

""A very average (and windy) suburb""

Lenah Valley is your typical average suburb. It is located at the foothills of Mount Wellington and it can be extremely windy here. There are also a lot of parts that are not very sunny as the sun is blocked by the surrounding hills. And it is very hilly, so if you like walking - be prepared for quite an exercise. On the plus side, the suburb is green and leafy and you can walk to the Mt Wellington. On the minus side, the facilities are almost non-existent - a couple of corner shops, a couple of chemists, newsagency and a bakery - unfortunately, located all together along the local 'shopping strip', Augusta Rd. Another negative is the traffic during morning peak time - quite a few bottle necks mean that your trip to work or school can take anywhere between 30 and 40 min., while in a quieter time it would only be about 10 min.
Overall, it is an affordable place to live but there is a reason for affordability.

Sandy Bay

"A great place to live for everybody"

Sandy Bay is one of the best suburbs in Hobart. The older area ("the village") has beautiful old houses with nice established gardens, the newer area boasts an eclectic mix of older and newer houses. As the suburb is stretched along the river Derwent the views are second to none. There is also an excellent long sandy beach. Sandy Bay is very conveniently positioned, which means it is close to everything in Hobart (i.e., almost everything is within a walking distance). Easy 10-20 minutes stroll would take you to the University, the city, a number of primary and secondary schools, or the Salamanca. There are two large supermarkets in the main street (Sandy Bay road) and a large number of excellent restaurants and other eateries, as well as various shops and other services. Overall, the suburb is always very popular and provides an excellent value for home owners as well as people looking to buy a rental property.
