Meekatharra

"Outback town in the middle of nowhere."

Meekatharra is approx 760 kms north east of Perth and is the largest town in the Murchison Shire with around 800 residents. Many of these residents are aboriginal. Meekatharra is the main supply centre for the surrounding mining and farming districts. The town is growing with many roads and new building being erected. There is a new recreation centre with gym and basketball court being added to the existing centre. The local swimming pool is open from October until April and a number of sports are played on the playing fields in town. The is a well stocked library and a good telecentre. There is a hospital here with good facilities and a medical centre. Meekatharra is serviced by pre primary, primary and high state schools as well as a play centre. There are good shopping facilities, open air movie theatre when weather permits and of course hotels. There are motels, services station and caravan parks. The people here are friendly and very help and there is a great community spirit. Property prices here are quite reasonable and there is plenty of scenery and natural wonders to explore.

Murchison

"Remote settlement servicing stations in the area."

Murchison is often described as a “Shire with no Town” as the area is made of 29 stations. These stations pull their income from cattle and sheep producing meat and wool. The population of the area is around 160 residents spread out over the area. There is a settlement site which serves the Murchison community. The Settlement is on the Carnarvon-Mullewa Road where there is an administration centre, staff housing, a roadhouse, which has fuel, take away food and emergency groceries, a caravan park and museum , five polo crosse fields, cricket pitch, floodlit tennis courts, childrens playground and horse stables. There is the Murchison Sportsmans Club where locals from the properties around gather for sporting events, family days, fund raising, workshops and meetings. There are events held regularly and at Christmas there is a Christmas tree and a get together. There are many natural attraction around the area, some easy to drive to whilst others may require a 4 wheel drive. People traveling in this area should make sure they have ample fuel, water and emergency equipment. And be advised that mobile phone services are not good and signal may not available in all areas. The climate is very warm with summer temperatures well over the 30 degree mark. The nearest school is Pia Wadjarri Remote Community School and all other students use distance education methods.

Narrogin

"Wheat belt town with all amentities"

Narrogin is situated approx 192 km south east of Perth in the fertile wheat belt of Western Australia. Narrogin has every amenity needed for the 4,240 residents, including a modern fully equipped district hospital and medical centres with caring doctors and staff. There are also many allied health professionals and a good aged care program. The educational standard here is high with a senior high school, an agricultural college, residential College, Tafe campus and 3 primary schools as well as day care centres and kindergartens. Narrogin offers good shopping with supermarkets, specialty shops, restaurants, newsagents, banks with ATM’s as well as cafes and pubs etc. There are a number of galleries and arts and craft stores and markets on a regular basis. Narrogin has plenty to occupy the sports person with Little Athletics, football cricket, bowls, clay shooting, badminton, golf, netball, swimming, tennis as well as taekwondo, squash and equestrian clubs. The area as many playing fields, a great recreation centre with indoor heated pool. Getting to and from Narrogin is easy with a good highway and rail system.

Midland

"Ideal suburb close to all amenities."

Midland is a suburb which is a 30 minute drive east of Perth CBD and is in the heart of the Swan valley wine district. The area has much to offer with both the Midland gate and Centrepoint shopping centres offering a large range of shops including major departments stores such as Kmart, Myer, Target etc, boutique stores and a myriad of specialty stores for all your needs as well as supermarkets and food courts. There is an 8 screen cinema in Midlands Gate. There are some outstanding secondary schools here namely La Salle College which is a co-ed school and caters for students from year 8 – 12. Governor Stirling Senior High School is another excellent high school and offers students special programs in sport, music language programs and other vocational areas. Midland has a number of good primary schools and pre primary and day care facilities as well. The district is well serviced by modern hospitals with up to date equipment and a number of medical centres offering all types of necessary services. Swan Hills Swimming Club is a large club and the clubroom is located in a newly renovated aquatic centre. There are also large playing fields, golf courses and a BMX track. Home prices have risen quite a bit but with a little shopping around a good home at a reasonable price can be found.

Its not actually that bad. It has great markets, shops, relaxed environment, good transport and when ever i go there i never have had a problem. Its all in your attitude.

Quite frankly I am sick and tired of people who are most likely real estate agents trying to sugar coat areas, unless you want to have to teach your kid MMA from a very young age or to have him/her become a drug user I really wouldnt recommend living here theres so many better places in perth for similar prices, midland isnt the place to be for a good beginning.

We had a nice home in Midland + after 2.5yrs of listening to hoons + police sirens we ran out of there, people keep saying its improving but family who still live there say its high crime compared to other similar priced areas

Katanning

"Close to many major towns"

Katanning is a three hour drive south east of Perth and is two hours from Albany. This beautiful area has everything to offer including your choice of schools with both state and catholic primary and high schools as well as kindergartens and pre schools. There is also a TAFE college at Katanning. There are a number of medical centres with allied health clinics as well. Katanning Health Service and Hospital has up to date equipment with fully trained experienced staff. There is home and community care and disability services. There are plenty of shops with supermarkets, specialty stores, tavern, chemists, etc. Sport is popular here with good sized playing fields, a leisure centre and a swimming centre for those hot summer days. Property prices are rising steadily although it is possible to still pick up a bargain. Rentals too are on the rise and are becoming more and scarcer. The area boasts some beautiful scenery and has many vineyards and wineries as well as galleries and arts and craft shops.

Noranda

"Northern suburb close to huge parklands."

Noranda is a leafy suburb 6 kms to the north of Perth. Close to Whiteman Park which is over 100 acres of bush, parklands and lakes ideal for barbeques and picnics, Noranda has some fine stately homes in the upper price range. The shopping facilities here are excellent with large centres offering everything from supermarkets and food courts to department and specialty stores and boutiques. There are excellent medical centres as well as your choice of hospital in the neighbouring suburbs. There are any number of allied health services such as physio and occupational therapists, optometrist, dentists etc. being so close to the city centre there is an unlimited choice of educational options both state and private with TAFE colleges nearby. Apart from Whiteman Park with its many features there are many playing fields, recreation centres and other sporting venues in Noranda and surrounding suburbs for your entertainment. There are also a number of cinemas, clubs and hotels with live entertainment and restaurants and cafes. The area has something to offer most people, those who prefer the suburbs as opposed to those who love a night on the town or a major shopping fix.

Denham

"Northern town great for a sea change."

Denham is located in the Shark Bay area and is situated on the Peron Peninsula. Denham is famous for its prawns and has a large seafood industry although it was once a major pearling port. Denham is also the main administrative centre for the area. Many of the major attractions here are out of town with some being accessible only by 4 wheel drive but they are well worth it... Tourism is very big here and many of the town’s residents are employed in the tourist industry in some way. Getting to Denham is easy traveling on the 840 km sealed road from Perth or there are flights available several times a week. Coaches are also used both only by tourists but by many locals as well. Denham has motels, caravan parks and bed and breakfasts for the tourist and although property prices here are getting quite high due to all the area has to offer. There is a supermarket, specialty shops, fast food outlets as well as newsagents, chemist, souvenir shop etc. There are also a number of cafes and restaurants, a post office and several service stations. There is a good sized airport, boat ramps and jetties for the boatie and fisherman. Educational facilities are good with Shark Bay School catering for students from K-12.

Augusta

"Great area with plenty of surrounding towns."

Augusta is in the south west area of Western Australia, the region houses the most westerly point on Australia’s coastline and is a popular tourist destination 317 km south of Perth. Situated on the near the hardy Inlet the area boasts wonderful scenery, great surfing and fishing as well as other water sports and has many amenities for the local and tourist alike. There are over 40 wineries here famous for producing some fine wines. Augusta is serviced by a good well equipped hospital and medical centres as well as physiotherapists, chiropractors etc. There are plenty of shops with a good supermarket, specialty shops for most of your needs and a number of banks with ATM’s, newsagents, chemist etc. There are also arts and craft shops and galleries to visit or to display and sell your wares. Augusta has good educational facilities nearby with Augusta Primary school and a high school in Margaret River. TAFE colleges and university campus are all within easy reach. There are many sporting venues with playing fields, recreation centres, golf courses and swimming pools and a number of sporting clubs and association for you to join. Augusta is easy to reach by car via good roads and highways as well as by coach or the very efficient rail system.

Morley

"Upmarket suburb with quality homes"

Situated in the northern inner suburbs Morley is approx 10 kms from the Perth CBD. Built in 1994 the Centro Galleria is the second biggest commercial shopping centre in Perth and features supermarkets, large department store such as Kmart, Myer and Target as well as around 227 specialty and boutique stores, a court and cinemas. Morley has some good restaurants as well as the usual multinational fast food outlets and local fish and chip and pizza shops. There are pre primary, primary and secondary schools both state and catholic and the area has some great sporting venues including a swimming pool, playing fields for numerous sports as well as AMF Bowling, rollerdome and many other sporting activities. Morley has a medical centre and is well serviced by several hospital is nearby suburbs. Because of the close proximity to the CBD the housing prices in Morley are quite high although the quality of housing is very high. Rental properties are scarce and prices tend to reflect the demand. Morley is not on a train line and commuting to the city is by bus, private transport or a drive to the near railway station some kilometers away.

"Prestige area with many new estates"

Ascot is a popular suburb of Perth and is close to the Great eastern Highway. Ascot is well known for its horse racing track and many horse racing meets are held here including the Autumn Cup. This is a very upmarket area and is surrounded by luxury homes and prestige units and townhouses all of which are quite expensive. There are many schools here ranging from pre primary to secondary and you have the choice of state, catholic or private. Apart from horse racing there are many sporting venues including indoor recreatio0n centres, go kart and motor cycling, tennis, golf etc. as well as playing fields for numerous sports with many clubs and associations offering membership and coaching. Ascot boasts some good shopping facilities and being so close to Perth there is no end of nightlife. There are good medical facilities by way of medical centres and hospital all within easy reach. Ascot is a great place for young career minded singles and business executives.

"Get away from it all."

Want to get away from the rat race but still be with in easy reach of a major centre? Yanchep is 45 kms north of Perth and is joined to the town of Two Rocks here there are some beautiful unspoilt beaches and is near Yanchep National Park with its unique vegetation and wildlife. There are also caves and Aboriginal heritage sites. Locals and visitors to the area can also enjoy swimming, fishing, bushwalking and diving etc. there are some good restaurants here and a café as well as shopping facilities for your basic needs and being so close to the major shopping centres in Perth is a definite bonus when in need of major retail therapy. There is a pre primary to secondary school and medical facilities are close at hand. Being out of the city environment you will find Yanchep a very friendly and community minded place and real estate prices her are moderate for both rental and purchases. Many people use this area as a weekend or holiday destination and are in awe of those lucky enough to live here permanently.

"Friendly area with good facilities."

Located 940 km north of Perth, Carnarvon is well known for its bananas, seafood and tropical fruits and has a very warm tropical climate and so is also prone to cyclones during the summer season. Carnarvon has good medical facilities with a medical centre and well appointed hospital. There are pre primary, primary and secondary schools both state and catholic, a TAFE college and is serviced by School of the Air. The town has an airport and good roads. Supermarkets, specialty and boutique stores are plentiful with everything you could need at your finger tips. There are numerous sporting venues with a recreations centre, oval, playing fields and courts a swimming pool and skate park and has many clubs and associations to join. The apart from horticulture the town is also known for salt and gypsum mining at Lake McLeod some 65 km north of the town. The Fishing Industry is also alive and well at Carnarvon. Real estate bargains can be found.

Exmouth

"Gateway to Nigaloo Reef and friendly town."

Located 1270 kms north of Perth, Exmouth is a major coastal town now favored for a tourist destination. Although relatively small with a population of just over2500, Exmouth is the gateway to Ningaloo Reef and the Cape Range National Park. There is plenty of shopping here with supermarket and specialty stores as well as a beauty salon, massage therapist, newsagency, toyworld etc. Be warned though that the only service provider in Exmouth for mobile phone services is Telstra but sim cards can be purchased at a number of outlets here. Being a tourist area there are plenty of restaurants and cafes as well as takeaway food bars and there a numerous opportunities to partake in some great seafood. The climate here is tropical but is prone to cyclones during the cyclone season. Exmouth has all the amenities you need with a medical centre, fully equipped hospital, emergency services, and allied health professionals. There is a pre primary, primary and secondary school as well as extra subjects available. This can be distance or face to face learning modes. Marine and nautical Studies are also taught in Exmouth. There are plenty of playing fields for a number of sports and a full sized swimming pool as well. Property prices are quite high here and rentals tend to be scarce.

City Beach

"Beach side suburb with great amenities but a little too expensive to buy."

8 kms west of Perth CBD, City Beach is a coastal suburb and the area which is made up of several sections and has two popular beaches, Floreat Beach and City Beach itself. Many major surf carnivals are held here and there is great surfing for all with certain sections of the beaches suitable for different levels of surfer. There are public toilets, kiosks and restaurants handy as well as children’s playgrounds. Being a major coastal centre so close the city real estate prices are extremely high with many prestige properties. Rentals too are priced at the high end of the market with supply and demand forcing these properties upward. There is plenty of shopping here and there are major shopping centres in Perth. Education wise there are pre primary, primary and secondary schools, both state and private as well as TAFE colleges and university campuses all in close proximity. There is no end of sporting facilities with venues for most sports, playing fields and of course many water sports with windsurfing and kite surfing being very popular during the summer months.

"Handy to everything and easy commute."

Greenwood in a suburb in the northern area of Perth and is with easy distance to the CBD and is well serviced by public transport including rail and bus lines. There is no end of shopping options with large stores and specialty shops as well as supermarkets, convenience stores, service stations etc. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes as well as takeaway food outlets with the usual multinational fast food chains within a short distance of each other. There are pre primary and daycare centres, primary and secondary schools both state and catholic catering for students right through schools and there are TAFE colleges and universities close by. There are a number of medical centres and numerous hospitals in surrounding suburbs. Sporting activities such as swimming, little athletics, team sports, tennis and football etc are all played at the many sporting venues dotted around the area, with sporting clubs and associations plentiful. Real estate prices are within reach of most people if you are prepared to buy at the lower end of the market. Moderately priced rental properties can be found and bargains are always available to those with a good rental history.

Armadale

"Great community spirit and ideal for families."

Armadale is an outer suburb of Perth and is only 28 kms from the CBD of Perth. Many people commute to the city for work using a very good public transport system of rail and bus lines as well as driving in private vehicles. Depending on the type of work you do there are also many employment opportunities in Armadale itself as the area is large and continues strong growth. Armadale has many sporting venues including an aquatic centre, playing fields for most sports, an indoor recreation centre with gym, and courts for netball basketball etc. There is a BMX track located nearby as well as a skate park. There are numerous clubs and associations operating in the area. Armadale is a very family orientated area and there are lots of parks and reserves for family picnics and BBQ’s with children’s play areas. There are Pre primary, primary and secondary state and private schools in this area and Armadale is serviced by the Armadale –Kelmscott Memorial Hospital and there are several medical centres. Home prices have risen and are now quite expensive. Rental market is stable and prices are higher than one would expect. Plenty of shopping available with large centre with supermarkets variety stores boutique and specialty stores.

"Fast growing agricultural area."

Dardanup is approx a 15 minute drive from Bunbury and is located 200kms from Perth. On the edge if the scenic Ferguson Valley, Dardanup is a fertile faming area and is well known for its cattle. This is a very fast growing region with many people moving here both from Perth as well as from the eastern states, great infrastructure and friendly people make this a very alluring place to settle or retire. There are plenty of shopping facilities in Dardanup with supermarkets and specialty shops in the town plus the larger centres in Bunbury. Educational facilities are good here with pre primary and primary state schools as well as a catholic school. Bunbury or Australind High Schools are nearby for secondary students as well as Tafe colleges. Bunbury hospital is nearby and is modern and well equipped. and there are medical centres in Dardanup. This town has a number of sporting venues, with associations and sporting clubs for most sports. Naturally in an area such as this there are rock pools, the river with sandy beaches and numerous fishing spots. Bush walking in also a popular pass time. Property prices as well as rentals have risen sharply in recent years but there are bargains available at both ends of the market for the serious buyer.

Australind

"Satellite suburb of Bunbury with plenty of good features"

Australind is bordered by Leschenault Inlet and the Collie River and is only 10km north of the major centre of Bunbury and is 165kms south of Perth. The town is a satellite type suburb of Bunbury and being in such close proximity has all the amenities of Bunbury on hand yet offers everything you could want in the way of shopping, with the large Australind Village Shopping Centre which has many specialty and boutique style stores as well as a Coles Supermarket. There are numerous sporting venues covering a myriad of sports and there are numerous local sporting clubs and associations. There are five primary schools in Australind including a catholic primary school. Australind High School was officially opened in 1987 and caters for high school students to year 12. There are medical centres here and the area is serviced by Bunbury District Hospital. With the river and the inlet being so close water sports are popular and the fishing is quite good. Australind is a community minded area is spite of the fact that it has grown rather rapidly and continues to do so.

australind has so many different pockets, that is what makes so different and caters for all types of lifestyles from semi rural at the meadow landing, Leschenault end to close to centre of Bunbury with River access in Clifton Park with every thing in between. Good high school, and lots of primary school options both public and private. Clifton Park even has its own school. Strangely the Bunbury Golf Club is in Australind-that's how good it is!

"Mining town with great community spirit"

Newman is 1186 kms from Perth and is in the Pilbara region. This is a mining town and relies heavily from this industry for it economy. The town is rather modern and despite its desert location has been ‘beautified’ by the mining company with the planting and care of thousands of shrubs. With a population of around 5000 Newman serves two mines and has an excellent shopping centre with supermarkets and specialty stores for all your needs and there are restaurants and tavern serving good meals at affordable prices. There is a primary and secondary school in Newman as well as a catholic college which caters for students from K -12 and there is a pre primary and child care facilities. The town has a medical centre and fully equipped modern hospital. There is plenty to do in the way of sport with many local clubs and associations using the golf course, swimming pool, playing fields for most sports and the tennis courts. As with many other towns in W.A. lately, property prices have gone up and are now at the same level as the eastern states. Rental prices too have risen but shopping around could find you a bargain.

Sorry pah123 but you have lead people up the road with your comment. Having lived locally in Newman for over 6 years you are way off base. to set people straight Newman is nothing like the above comment except that it is a long way from Perth and driven by the mining sector. It is a dirty dusty hot place to live with temperatures over 40 degrees every day for 6 months of the year. There is one small shopping centre with a Woolworths, pharmacy, Bankwest, Sky building society, Rockmans, a coffee shop (currently closed), subway & chicken treat and a Chinese shop for takeaway and a Retravision. There are two primary schools and a high school, no catholic college. 2 daycare centres which will cost you tour entire wage. Eating out is expensive as is a trip to the doctors if you can get an appointment with one of the two doctors servicing over 8000 people. The hospital requires an upgrade and the community complains about this constantly. If anything major happens you will be flown to Port Hedland. There is also a large FIFO community which should be considered in your decisions in moving to a mining town as this community of people impacts on the local community services with additional pressure which in turn drives up prices on everything. This is a town where people come for one reason and that is the $$$ so don't expect a warm fuzzy community vibe. While some people try to make the most of it others are more interested in gossiping and bringing everyone else down around them. It is good while your kids are young but there is nothing for teenagers to do and they can often go astray through boredom. Education standards are well below the national average at all schools which can be seen on the myschool website.

hi i have read your comment and have some questoins, My partner and i are looking at come there as he has been offered a good job, We currently live in a tiny town in gove NT, how ever want a change, I just wanted to no if there are many things to do here on your days of for a young couple with no kids. We are looking for good friends BBQ's and camping and also the acasonal road trip. i just want to no if its going to much like here, were you find yourself bored on your days of with no were to go and nothing to do but drink :S lol

Most young people go to live in an outback town to earn quickly, save hard and make the most of the town so when they depart their bank account is full to set them up for their future. We did that in 1977-1986 and it served us well . It is easy enough to find things to do if you want to look for it.

Nullagine

"Mining town in the middle of nowhere"

Nullagine is a town virtually in the middle of the desert being 1364 km northwest of Perth and is located 110 km south of Marble Bar and 200 kms from Newman. First settled during the goldrush the town is still famous for gold nuggets and is also a great base for four wheel drive destinations with Carrawine Gorge, Skull Springs, and Running Waters within a day’s drive. There is some good fishing around these areas and camping is permitted. Nulligine does not have a lot of real estate to purchase and does not have much to offer the local resident. There is a roadhouse which supplies fuel and oil etc as well as groceries, is an agent for the Commonwealth Bank, has an ATM, and also serves takeaway food and cold drinks. The town has a primary school and also relies on School of the Air. Medically, there is a community health service and is serviced by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The climate is very warm during the day but being in a desert area night time temps in winter can drop dramatically.
