Reviews of Whalan, NSW

"Positively surprised"

Me and my boyfriend moved here 6 months ago as we bought our first house. We were a bit sceptical at the start because some of our friends didn't talk positively about this suburb. Honestly the more we spend time here, the more we love this place. Plenty parks, Westfield in 2km, the new shopping center in 3km, new sydney zoo in 10m and a lot more! Everything we need is always nearby. We live in mimika road, we have friendly neighbours and we feel safe. I hope people in the future will go through the prejudice that live around this area.

"Pleasant surprise"

After living in the inner west suburbs all my life, I was shocked when I first when to open homes of some in the 2770 area but after living here for half a year i must say its great.

Better lifestyle enjoying the greenery and parks as well as neighbours are much friendlier and can tolerate dog barking at weird times in the night.

You can always count on someone taking your used goods if you leave it out! :p

"There are a lot"

There are a lot of negative comments going on about this suburb but I say let them prattle on. It's making it cheap for me to live here and I'm not complaining about that! In the meantime, if you're not too fussed, I reckon you could make a life for yourself here. The racing track being in proximity has its pros and cons but it's not very much different from any other suburb I've lived in to be honest!

Hello, I am thinking of buying a property in Malakua street but found some Aborinal Office, Can you please provide some more details of your experience. The street looked nice and clean but I am worried of any trouble.

KikiS

"Nice Living."

Whalan is a small nice suburb. many people don't know the suburb name when you tell them.
this suburb is good for first home buyers who wants to get in the property market with limited budget.
Not very expensive looking houses around but people are good as majority of the houses are elderly or retires owner occupied.
You cant judge a suburb with out living inn and as a long time resident I found this is one of the safe suburb you can count on when you thinking of living in affordable accommodation.

"Great place to enter the housing market!"

My son (22) purchased a property here about 1 year ago for $250,000 & hasn't looked back! It is a large 3B/room brick rendered house on a subdividable corner block. He says the people are easy-going & friendly. His street is just like any other suburban street in Sydney as far as I can tell & I've seen no evidence of any kind of disturbance at night. Basically he enjoys living there & I like visiting.

  • Close to all amenities

  • No more dangerous than anywhere
  • The minority groups are friendly

"Great Value For Money"

Whalan is a suburb near Mt Druitt that is often tainted with the misconceptions and stereotyped prejudices of people who have never lived in an affordable bedroom suburb. It is close to main transport such as rail to the city and major shopping malls at Mt Druitt, Blacktown, Penrith and St Marys. While there is public housing in the area the majority of homes are either owner occupied or private rentals and the majority of public housing tenants make great neighbours. Getting around is easy and there is always parking wherever you wish to go, all services and retail facilities are here or within a few minutes drive. Schools, public transport and other infrastructure is here with a good level of medical and dental services available. The community is a working class suburb with approximately 35% receiving some form of Centrelink benefit and one of the largest percentages of indigenous people in an urban locality however crime is less than many more affluent suburbs and Whalan is a very safe, peaceful and quiet place to live and to raise a family. More importantly, it is very affordable and great value. I first bought here in 1995 and sold up to move overseas in 2002. Upon my return in 2006 I again bought a house just 100 metres from my old place. House prices are sensible and mortgages affordable. Even with five kids and self employed I am able to live well enjoying a standard of living I could not dream of if I were back in Randwick where I grew up. While I miss the beach it is less than an hour away and the Blue Mountains are visible from my back verandah. Traffic is reasonable for Sydney but as I work from home I rarely have any traffic hassles. In the last four years my home has appreciated nearly 30% on what we paid for it and is now worth $60-70K more than we bought it for. Some of the people here are a bit 'low-rent' so to speak, we have our share of bogans, westies and what have you but pretty much all of them will be there if you need a hand, even the roughest! Whalan is a WISIWYG kind of place,no pretense and great value for money.
