Cairns is a nice small city, with a hot tropical climate. The wet seasons (November - March) brings a lot of rain thus making it very humid. I love the tropical weather so don't mind it, but others can't bare it. I'm not sure about the job opportunities, I would suggest you check out a internet job website to see whats available. There are plently of shops, so buying your necessary goods is easy. Insects are not a huge problem, depending on how close you are to water, mozzies are probably the worst of it, and thats easy to manage with repelant, and that is only seasonal too :) Housing prices are still quite good, but seem to be on the way up. For raising kids it's fairly good. plenty of schools and activities to do with them. Crime can be an issue, but depending on where you come from, it's probably not as bad as other bigger cities. If you want less crime, a quieter area or acreage lifestyle, your better off heading up to the tablelands where the properties are also cheaper, bigger and the weather not as hot. Hope this helps!

Work is picking up. Good suburbs are kewarra beach and trinity Beach. Clifton Beach isn't bad either. Friendly locals. Summers are somewhat humid. Snakes are around in warmer months.
