If your looking north of Adelaide may I suggest the Clare Valley, great area for kids, friendly community and work options also as M Lange has mentioned

Mallala, Two Wells, Balaklava way is very friendly with affordable houses and great little community orientated people, only 45minutes from the city. Barossa way is beautiful too but agree with M Lange.

I live north of Adelaide (further than the Barossa) and can recommend Tanunda and Nuriootpa, although there can be some pricey housing there. The communities are fairly tight-knit too, so it may take a little while to settle in. If you're willing to move further north, Clare is a lovely town to live in - great for families.
