Hi Joanne, there are lots of family friendly areas throughout the Illawarra; Mangerton, Figtree, Keiraville, Cordeaux Heights, Fairy Meadow, Balgownie to name just a few. Most of the high schools in the area are also quite good, depending on where you decide to live Edmund Rice, St Mary's, Smiths Hill, The Illawarra Grammar School, Holy Spirit, Wollongong High amongst others.

Joanne, please see below link for schools in the Shellharbour region. From what I know ALL of these schools are very reputable.
