Perhaps some of the rooftop bars will be doing something with the fireworks this year? This was psoted on here the other day, it talks about some of the different bars in Melbourne.

I find packing up a picnic and heading to a spot/park with a view of the city skyline is a good way to avoid the crowds in the city on NYE and still enjoy the fireworks. Good places include:
1. Yarra Boulevard, Kew
2. Ruckers Hill, Northcote
3. Green Point, Brighton Beach
4. The Strand, Williamstown
5. & Mount Dandenong.

Packing a picnic and sitting on the Yarra near Anderson street is nice. I'm sure you can get a better view of fireworks closer to the city but this way avoids traffic after midnight.
