What's the best (central) area to live with kids in Melbourne?

We have a three year old but don't want to be in a suburb. Preferably somewhere with good tram links into the CBD. Was thinking of Kew or St. Kilda. An area that's good for schools but also has a bit of life to it.

Clifton Hill/Northcote is a great location for young families. There is sufficient access to public transport that goes direct into the city. As well as it being a great area for public transport, Clifton Hill feels like a suburb as there is still parks and cafes/pubs for weekend fun. About 10 minutes drive from the city but still feels like a suburb when you get home.
