Yes, its pretty much same as other suburb in Melbourne regarding safety.
Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) are generally more accepting of gay people than other cultures, given, that we are not influence by religious beliefs.

Before i moved to Sunshine I have heard numerous suburb stories about it (one of my friend said he was scared to even drive through sunshine, lol) therefore i was little intimidated first. I soon learned it was a safe place to live, but i am not stupid enough to go to the dark and quiet area during the night by myself. this is the same as when I'm in eastern suburbs.

In recent years, my friends are being more open minded and are moving to western suburb due to the affordable house prices, and this area is changing also i found my house value is increasing faster than my friends eastern suburb houses.

I would not buy an apartment in any area, houses are better.
