"Trendiest Adelaide suburb with arty-eco-hipster vibe"

We've been living in Bowden for three years now and absolutely love it! There's such an eclectic mix of people here with more artists and crafts people than any suburb I've previously lived in. Our neighbours, all long-term Bowden residents, have been really welcoming and helped us settle in.

The public transport links are fantastic. A choice of two train stations (takes literally 5 mins to get to the CBD) and its FREE to travel in on the tram (about 12 mins to the CBD). There are also buses to the city centre via North Adelaide from Hawker St.

As someone who spends a lot of time in cafes I love how many great eateries there are round here. My favourites are The Red House and the Hawker St cafe but there's also The Loose Caboose, Jarmers and of course the wonderful Plant 4 markets every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. There's such a great vibe at these markets - people heading from all over town to enjoy the fabulous food stalls, live music, organic produce, vintage clothes and homewares, plants, jewellery etc etc. We have brunch there every Saturday and often meet friends for dinner on Friday night.

If you're into live music it's a short walk to The Entertainment Centre or The Gov. In the summer there are films every second week in Bowden Park and there's also Cirkidz and the Bike Kitchen (these guys are wonderful and have helped me fix my bike twice for only $5 each time!) There are LOADS of little art galleries in the area so the place is really buzzing during SALA. And there are great play parks for kids.

I'm trying to think of down sides, for balance, but I haven't really come across any. There are some ugly industrial buildings and a few bits of waste ground waiting to be developed so it's not all cute old cottages and funky designer developments. From what I gather there have also been crime issues in the past but we haven't been aware of any since moving here. I think a lot has changed over the past few years. Parking can be a problem and I'm not sure what the local schools are like. Otherwise, totally recommend it. We won't be moving!

"An eclectic mix with major changes on the way!"

Great location, close to CBD and North Adelaide. Long been a tail of 2 sections - Small cottage style homes and Industry. North of Hawker St has primarily been the residential part of Bowden, and south, between Hawker St. & train line has been industrial with a few homes in the mix. This is a huge area & is about 3 time larger than the north side is with very few residents - for now. Major changes happening with the "Clipsal site" being redeveloped. Some beautiful examples of character homes throughout. Work has started, and the transformation will be ongoing for some time. This is a great location for investment!!!

"Car Crime is Rampant"

I lived in Bowden for about a couple of years, and we had a car parked on the street outside our house broken into or stolen about once a month on average. It is impossible to leave a car with anything of value on the street. I have lived in Adelaide for about 20 years and apart from the time I lived in Bowden have not had any crime problems.

Also, we were unable to get ADSL due to limited phone lines at the exchange and a low quality phone line.

Great for

  • Close to CBD

Not great for

  • Crime
  • Bad phone exchange.

"best location in ADL....."

Bowden is right on the fringe of the city. It's got a great vibe and we can't stop raving about it.

It has some of the best eateries and hang outs are in and around Bowden plus North ADL is just over the road.

The B Brompton Hotel which is awesome, Bombay Bycicyle Club just around the corner, The Gov at the end of Gibson St, Excellsior on Hawker St, Enzo's on Port Rd, Norberto's Argintinian Gril on Port Road and that just to name a few.

Often we walk to dinner and drinks on the weekend either to one of these or to North Adelaide and if you do need to get a cab it's only $10 max from CBD.

Entertainment Centre is close so is perfect for seeing acts (so no parking issues - just walk from home) and then having a drink at any one of the fab pubs afterwards.

I like Bowden better than Brompton (and i've lived in both - so didn't move far). It's more beautique and not so built up as Brompton which has had major redevelopement and it's like your living on top of each other in Brompton.

For a suburb that is so close to the CBD, I think we've picked up a real bargain with our new place and feel we'll be laughing all the way to the bank in a few years time. If this was SYD or MEL you would pay over $1m for an apartment this close to the CBD or Nth Adl. so we couldnt be happier.

Bowden is a very friendly, close-knit suburb where people look out for each other. It is a very well kept secret.
