Break-Ins?
Either way, it seems strange, considering I've never heard of such a high number of breakins before moving here...

I have never heard of anyone having a break-in in Lafayette--not to a house anyway. When I was in college in Berkeley though I had my car broken into twice and I had friends who literally had to scare off a guy who tried to break into their house. (He was probably on drugs.)
On the bright side, the second time someone broke into my car they left me these stylish glasses inside of an envelope. I still have them and wear them when I'm feeling like a hoodlum.
Cal was definitely one of the only places I had break-ins too. But I got you beat Flowergirl, 3 times and they took my radio twice. They must have liked you though, they didn't leave me any apparel only the fould stench of bathlessness.
We don't get too much break-ins here in Orinda. Crime is pretty low--mostly petty theft around here. We have had one murder case (a woman killed her husband) in the ten years that I have lived here. It is probably the safest place I have ever lived as a matter of fact.
Hmm...Orinda may be the place to go! It seems like a common phenomenon, particularly in the Peninsula - and urban/suburban classifications have almost as little to do with it as the economic area. I've heard of recent cases, just from friends, in East Palo Alto, Menlo Park (the nice part), Half Moon Bay and Western San Francisco alike. It is an unfortunate but existing phenomenon here...
I imagine though that every big city will have its share of crime. It would have to be a pretty small town where you wouldn't get that sort of thing. Certainly no where I have lived.
Actually one of the safest places I have ever lived is Phoenix Arizona. That is despite authorities curruntly calling it the kidnapping capitol of the world because illegal immigration. (The whole thing is so ridiculous--what a sellout McCain has become.)
Yeah, Arizona is a little ridiculous these days...isn't downtown Phoenix pretty sketchy these days? I went there once during daytime and it was just fine...but I could see the tendency toward it not being a good neighborhood or place to go at night. I've heard this about the neighborhood from other folks, too.
