Chicago actually has a decent economy for tech jobs. I've known and worked with a few people who headed out to San Francisco for work in the tech sector, but that's not to say there aren't a fair number of them in Chicago. I suspect they mostly went for the weather. I've been contacted a few times recently for tech jobs through LinkedIn, so I'd suggest fully filling out your profile. It helps.
