Cowell is suited to those who like fishing and have a boat as it is situated on a safe harbour. Popular fish caught here include snapper, silver whiting, blue swimmer crabs as well as razorfish and flounder. Cowell also has wonderful fresh oysters with farms in the harbour. Good general store open 7 days caters for most foods as does the hardware store. Butcher only open office hours Mon-Fri if you're lucky and he's not that friendly. Bakery leaves a lot to be desired - don't expect "home baked" goodies. Chemist and Post Office. Two hotels. Hospital with resident GP. Volunteer Ambulance, Sea Rescue & CFS services. Plenty of young families in Cowell as Iron Duke mine only 50kms north of town. However, night life is practically non existent unless you like going to the pub. Easy travel distance to Whyalla or Port Lincoln where most "townies" do their main shopping. Being on a harbour with mangroves, don't forget your insect repellent as mosquitos are abundant. Have to travel out of town to reach any decent beaches. Kiosk at boat ramp does great fish and chips using locally caught fish. Tourists are a regular sight in town.
