VOICE YOUR OPINION! 52 car spaces will be removed from college st - sydney city

Hi,

My name is sara Vincent and I'm journalism student ...I'm writing an article about a CBD council project of building a cyclepath along college st (western side) , Hyde park ( eatern side), and instaling a hook turn in the intersection between oxford and college st to facilitate for cyclists turning north in college st . The project is part of a network of cyclepaths from Rozelle to Moore park. Because of this project, which will start mid 2009 and finish mid 2010, FIFTY TWO car spaces will be removed from college st.

More detailed info on the project is available on the link:

http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/AboutSydney/ParkingAndTransport/Cycling/Cycleways/CollegeStreet.asp

please voice your opinion regardless the area where you live, and If you live in this city area ....what do you think?? Is it going to improve traffic? stimulate the use of bycicles??? or disrupt traffic? will the removal of the street parking at college st affect you?

thank for your help,

If it will encourage cycling and make it safer then it sounds like a good idea.

It all depends on how much car parking there is in the area in first place. I would think there is a greater priority on cycling and promoting a cleaner form of transport. If it does promote more people to use the bikes, then I'm all for it.

What do you think the City of Sydney success rate with new traffic movement projects right in recent times?

I would love to know what you think. Very low success rate if you ask me.

I believe they tinker about, mess things up and then go home to areas well outside the area, not even using what they create in many cases I am sure. No doubt they move on to other jobs and leave there mess for the next tinker. What is it with the Bus Lane on Park Street (between College and Elizabeth Streets)? 99% of the buses use the right hand lane (the non bus lane) because they turn right from Park into Elizabeth. Not even using the dedicated bus lane.
As you might realise I don’t trust that city engineers actually know the streets they mess with well enough. They may have statistics and car counters but they don’t really know what they are dealing with when it come to how people actually use specific streets. I would place a big bet they don’t even live in the area they are messing with. Nor do they really understand how residents / commuters actually live and work with the city.

Do they know how many people actually use the Craigend Street bicycle lane? I am not against such priority lanes but I would like to know how many city engineers actually use what they create, before and after. It’s evident they get it wrong. A lot. They should travel the road they are about to change twice a day. At peak times like the rest of the road users. Both before and after. They also need to make suggestions on how to improve the situation once the project is done.
