This is my first winter in Denver, does it always snow this late in the year? May...really?

I am in accord with you regarding Colorado's fickle weather. I've seen snow in June in Colorado! The best thing to do when adjusting to Colorado's spring snowstorms is to memorize the following phrase, "We Need The Moisture." Say these words whenever we are blessed with snow or rain and you will soon welcome these wonderful sources of water for our dry state.
I am a Colorado native and I've learned through the years that our spring snowstorms are a fond memory in July and August when the temperature is 100 degrees and we haven't had measurable rain in months. April and May are traditionally wet months in Colorado and although snow in late April and early May seems unusual, for Colorado it goes with the territory. Say it with me: "We Need The Moisture." Welcome to Colorado!

I agree that it's atypical, but not unheard of. I happen to love the snow, every time it comes down, no matter what, as it so dramatically changes the feel of the city. Everything slows down a little bit and everyone is a little more talkative. The greatest thing about the Colorado spring snows is that they are gone so fast! We never have time to enter the doldrums of a long gray stretch.

Like Corbin, I'm a native and I have to agree that we always seem to need the moisture. But to answer your question, snow in May is not typical. February and March tend to be our heavy snow months, at least out here on the plains where I'm located. Rain would be nice for a change though!
