Which parts of East Harlem are "safe"?

Hi. I'm looking to rent in East Harlem, but not sure about how safe it is. Will be two white guys in their early 30's. I know certain areas are better than others, and I've heard a lot of "it's been getting better'. I've also been seeing a lot of listings around 116th & 1st/2nd. How is that neighborhood? Safe? Run down? Grimy? Hipstery?Can someone give me an oversimplified boundary for the "good" and "bad" parts of East Harlem? The affordable rent is attractive, and I work in Midtown East, so it's convenient.

My wife & I have been living on 102nd Lex/Park for 10 years. We have not had any incident ourselves. After the last of the drug dealers were removed about 7 years ago, the immediate neighborhood became trendy and the rents increased significantly. The caveat is that each little micro neighborhood can be very different from ones adjoining it. Since the big Target shopping mall was built on 116th near 1st a few years ago, that area has become much better than it was not long before. There are small pockets which you'd probably want to avoid. The caveat here is that crime can occur in any neighborhood at any time of the day or night
