Gooseberry Hill is surrounded by national park. There are all sorts of native animals and reptiles. I have seen a snake only twice in my front garden the last 5 years. It took off as soon as it saw me. They are more frightened of you. But it always pays to be vigilant in summer. Especially if you have pets.
