What is a Home-based Business?
A home-based business is a business run from within or at your home and is defined in Noosa Plan 2020 as follows: Home-based business means the use of a dwelling or domestic outbuilding on premises for a business activity that is subordinate to the residential use of the premises.
Examples of a Home-based business
There are different types of businesses and employment activities that might be conducted in the home including for example, home hosted visitor accommodation, home office, salon, classes (such as yoga classes or cooking classes) or home-based childcare. The business activity must be operated or conducted by a permanent resident of the dwelling.
In Residential Low Density zoning:
Accepted development subject to requirements (self-assessable) if:
a) operated entirely within an existing dwelling house or associated building;
b) does not include any industrial activity...
c) no more than 4 persons would be on the site for business purposes at any one time or if bed and breakfast accommodation, no more than 2 guest bedrooms are available for letting; and
d) with the exception of overnight guests, no customers, clients, employees or deliveries attend the site: i. between the hours of 6:00pm and 7:00am Monday to Friday; or ii. on weekends or public holidays.
Code assessment if:
a) no more than 6 persons would be on site for business purposes at any one time;
b) does not include any industrial activity listed in Table SC1.1.2 - Industry thresholds; and
c) with the exception of overnight guests, no customers, clients, employees or deliveries attend the site: i. between the hours of 6:00pm and 7:00am Monday to Friday; or ii. on weekends or public holidays.
Impact assessment (but still consistent) if:
a) no more than 20m2 of external space is used in the operation of the business;
