The Gatehouse at Aldgate - 1860

Years ago, this charming stone building was utilised as staff quarters for the historic homestead known as "Prestonfield". It was also the first point of entry for visitors and is now known as "The Gatehouse". It has been owned, loved and improved by the current family for many years but the time has come for new custodians to take over this unique property on the edge of Stirling in this highly desirable location in the Adelaide Hills.

The property was in need of restoration when it was purchased back in 2003. After years of hard work and an architectural addition of a bespoke conservatory, bathroom and laundry (completed in 2007) it is now a comfortable 2 bedroom country cottage on 15 acres of remnant bush. You will be able to go for a bushwalk without leaving home. You will come across kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and an abundance of birdlife. Native orchids bloom throughout the year. The cottage has been well maintained. The eat in kitchen boasts a Falcon free standing cooker, timber benchtops and a skylight. The stone wall in the kitchen flowing through to the hallway is a free-standing work of art. Its golden hues add warmth and character. What stories it could tell! Central heating features throughout as it does get quite cool up here in the winter. The hallway, bathroom and conservatory benefit from the luxury of heating beneath the striking red terrazzo floors. The main bedroom is adjacent to the bathroom, has a garden view and floor to ceiling storage cupboards. Bedroom 2 will comfortably accommodate your weekend guests and is located above the dry cellar. Access the cellar via a hatch in this room. Pauline Hurren, a well-respected local architect, was engaged to create an extension (the conservatory and wet areas) that was sympathetic to the existing dwelling. She created a magnificent glass conservatory which has become the favourite room in the cottage. It has 180-degree views to the gardens and is surrounded by an insulated verandah. So cosy and warm in the winter with the clever inclusion of electronic windows to provide ventilation in the summer.

The irrigated gardens surrounding the cottage are absolutely splendid. The historical oaks provide an abundance of shade in the summer months. The colours of the Japanese Maples, Liquidambars, Manchurian Pears and other deciduous trees are simply spectacular throughout Autumn. The netted veggie gardens and established fruit trees together with the assortment of azaleas, rhododendrons, camelias and roses must be seen to be fully appreciated. The architecturally designed garden house looks across the manicured lawn to the cottage. It's the perfect spot to sit and enjoy this stunning botanical setting.

Over the years, consideration has been given to extending the cottage. Plans are available to view that could work successfully if more living space is required.
