What's around Church Street

Land description

“Former St John's Anglican Church: Circa 1869.”

Inviting all formal offers to be presented to the listing agents by Wednesday 11th January 2023. The vendor reserves the right to accept any formal offers prior to the closing date.

Designed by Henry Hunter, this heritage-listed sandstone Gothic Revival church is a well-preserved example of colonial Tasmanian architecture. St Johns Church is one of the first buildings encountered upon entering the Tasmanian Midlands township of Ross.

Commissioned by local woolgrower Robert Kermode of Mona Vale in 1868 and constructed using the same team of building team who had recently completed the building of Mona Vale Chapel. The Church was consecrated by Bishop of Tasmania Charles Bromby on 14 May 1869.

Constructed from locally sourced masonry; St John's steeply pitched roof, 50-feef high sandstone spire, gable-roofed transept and clock in the tower sourced from Birmingham.

Internal finishes include beautiful geometrical tracery-stained pattern-glass windows manufactured by Ferguson and Urie of Melbourne, a fine oak lectern and Caen stone pulpit; presented by the Kermode Family. The steeply pitched roof is finished with panel and moulded pine boarding. A century old organ and oak prayer stall depicting an eagle, a symbol of St John donated and carved in 1928 in memory of the late Robert Kermode are all features upon this property.

St John's offered regular services in the Northern Midlands parish until 2019. Zoned Local Business and Community Purpose, St John's offers plenty of potential for any commercial ventures. From reception or artisan centre to food and/or beverage venue. Set upon an 829 sqm parcel of land positioned along Church Street, St John's business opportunities are endless.

Steeped in a history of convict past, Ross attracts tourists and locals who are keen to explore the historical sandstone architecture of the Ross Bridge, Man' O' Ross Hotel and surrounding buildings. Many visitors and locals walk along the banks of the Macquarie River, take in the clear country air, or cast a line to catch some trout. Ross has a collection of artisan stores that supports the general store/services station and post office. Ross is only a short ten-minute drive north to Campbell Town (11km) or a leisurely 50 minutes' drive from Launceston and one hour and 20 minutes to Hobart and bus service stops in the township daily.
