What's around Underwoods Road

House description

“Crafted Timber Haven”

This property impresses as soon as you arrive. Firstly, you cross over the rivulet boundary, then the winding driveway leads you up through a beautiful native bush setting. As you pop out at the car park, you notice how the main house and the surrounding structures blend with the natural environment. Immediately, a sense of calm sweeps over you.

The overall offering here consists of 2 separate titles totaling 64 acres (25.89ha). The top title (52 acres) is a diverse old forest with an amazing array of Tasmanian native vegetation. Huge Blue Gums and Stringy Barks trees tower out of a gully shading ancient tree ferns that line a winter-running creek. This is a wildlife haven including Devils towards dusk and even platypus in the rivulet.

The bottom title (11.5 acres) is where the hand-crafted home sits with a separate workshop/cabin, a chalet and a cleverly designed bush pole shelter. A large and productive food garden-with veggies, berries, fruit trees and chooks all protected by fencing-sits nearby the house. Along the rivulet, that flows year-round, wends a natural pathway that leads you into a cleared, grassy and private space- a fantastic spot to picnic or have friends camp.

The house is a hand-crafted work of art. It was designed and built to minimise its carbon footprint and be gentle on the surrounding environment. The design ensures every room gets a northern window exposure, allowing the sun to fill the spaces with natural light all year round. Each room reveals the different faces of local Tasmanian timbers. Particularly beautiful is the native Wattle solid wood paneling that lines most of the walls.

One of the very clever features, that is highly unique here, is the use of hand-flattened recycled corrugated iron sheeting to line the ceiling. It creates a beautiful country style aesthetic below the conventional colourbond external roof. The whole home has insulated external walls and ceilings. From the living space, there are French doors that open out onto the north-facing decked living space. The large picture windows throughout the house perfectly frame the nature that surrounds and invite the outside into the home.

Everything about the buildings on this property celebrate wood working craftsmanship. In fact, until recently, the property was used to teach traditional woodworking techniques. This occurred under the intriguing wooden shelter that in itself is another piece of sculptured art and design. Canter levered beams support the structure in a way that the whole shelter looks to float in space. Nearby is the original chalet built using traditional bush pole framing with 'Wattle and Daub' earth walls. It has a wonderful natural look and feel. The Chalet consists of an open plan living space with a separate room off to the side. Not currently registered for occupation, it could be developed further as a teenager's retreat, home office or studio.

Near the chalet is the main workshop, cleverly in the style of a quaint cabin with its own verandah and a carport lean-to. This is another structure built with traditional techniques and lends itself to multiple potential uses. In behind is the woodshed and other storage sheds.

The general surrounds are that of nature and rural properties with like-minded neighbours. Just up the road is the famed Peregrine school and you are within 10 minutes the vibrant cultural center of Cygnet. At its eastern end, Nicholls Rivulet Road joins with the Channel Hwy. Turn left and you are about 20 minutes from Hobart. Turn right and you are a few minutes for the stunning D'Entrecasteaux Channel and the ferry to Bruny Island
