Watkins Avenue West Hobart is named after the Watkins family who farmed the area before it was subdivided. George Watkins, a gardener, acquired land on the southern side of Warwick Street in the early 1850s, and although he died in 1877, his family continued to own property in the area until Watkins Avenue was created to connect Warwick Street and Patrick Street in the mid-1920s.

Sir Robert Cosgrove (1884-1969), former Premier of Tasmania, purchased land from the Watkins family in 1924 and subdivided it into allotments with access onto the western side of Watkins Avenue. Sir Robert built number 11 Watkins Avenue for himself and lived there for many years. He owned a grocery business in Liverpool Street and was first elected as a Labor politician in 1919. He became Premier in 1939 and, except for a couple of months, served in that position until 1958. He is the longest serving Premier in Tasmania's history.
