What's around High Street

House description

“William Broad Cottage. Circa 1839”

'William Broad Cottage' is a beautifully restored colonial home and a fine example of colonial architecture synonymous with the Tasmanian Midlands. The land was originally granted to Mr William Board in 1839, comprising three acres, one rod, and eighteen perches who completed the building.
Upon completion of the red bridge in 1839, connecting traffic along high street between Hobart and Launceston away from a river crossing downstream (at bridge street), 130 high street was re-designed from a residence to a coaching Inn/staging post. Coaches and drays changed horses at campbell town, and demand for fodder (hay and grain) was high, so the residences second storey was turned into a granary. There are still remnants of the internal hoist and gantry up in the roofline.
In 1845 Hugh Kean, a licensed victualler, approached William Broad to purchase a sizeable piece of land, the intention being to build a new inn and stables next door 130 high street to be known as The foxhunters return. The foxhunters return nowadays is a successful bookstore and residence.
William Broad cottage has had an interesting and varied history, becoming a school run by William Broad's two daughters, a barber's shop, a billiard saloon, an antique store and finally back to a residence. Under the current ownership, 130 high street has been restored to its former glory and offers the following:
- Three spacious bedrooms. Freshly carpeted in the two guest rooms and a free-standing pot-belly heater in the master bedroom.
- Formal dining and lounge room.
- Freshly painted throughout.
- Freshly sanded floorboard.
- Snug/sunroom looking over the 2732 sqm plot of land.
- Re-designed kitchen/laundry room.
- Updated bathroom finishes.
Set upon a deep fully fenced 0.675-acre plot with two lock-up storage sheds and lock-up single car garage, the property has ample off-street parking. There are several unusual elizabethan fruit trees, rose bushes and ornamental plants set throughout the property.
Positioned at the southern end of high street, 130 high street is within walking distance of the conveniences stores of Campbell Town and Elizabeth River. Campbell Town is the 'hub' of the central midlands area of Tasmania and features several artisans and antique stores and the district school, medical and aged care facilities. Campbell Town is only a leisurely 40 minutes' drive south of Launceston and 1hr 20 minutes north of Hobart. Secure your part of Midlands history, come and inspect 'William Boards' Cottage'.
Feel free to contact Nick Hay to arrange a private inspection or attend one of the open inspections soon.
