'Melville Park' was settled shortly after 1849 by the Flaherty family and then taken over by Alfred Moore. It was further developed by Samuel McKay, who built the homestead and barn and was known for his thoroughbred horses at Melville Park, including standing the 1898 winner of the Perth Cup, a stallion called LeVar, for three guineas!

The large Edwardian/Federation styled brick and tiled homestead with extensive verandas was constructed in the 1880s. The homestead has been beautifully restored inside and out. The restoration included new iron roof, modernised bathrooms and kitchen, added family room, office and polished jarrah flooring. The house is beautifully positioned on an East-West orientation to capture the afternoon sea breeze.

The double storey brick and iron barn/stables with projecting central winch beam and doors over carriage opening was completed in 1895. The stooks of hay were stored in the loft above the horses.
