'Costonville' is one of our beautiful Macleay Valley icons. As a local I had heard of this big grand home, but had never had the pleasure of walking through her until now and yes she lived up to the story. She is a home, a glorious home, a home of warmth that you only find with these big beautiful old gals of times past, the feeling you get being in this home is just like getting a big hug from grandma; a kiss on the head from mum when she tucks you in.
This grand old gal has stood here since the early 1900's, watched families come, families go, welcomed, cherished and nurtured them all in her grand strength and steadfast footing on mother earth and given no doubt, every one of her flock precious memories to take with them and reminisce of.
Now Costonville's latest flock have left her as life goes, and now there's a door open and the kettle on and the table set for the new flock to be welcomed and cherished and to live harmoniously like all before.
Costonville can't wait for someone else to see her new-age bling, her uplift as they say – she is so confident now, she wishes she had this kitchen and all this fancy stuff many years ago, but well she has it now and she feels she can stand next to the 'Belle of the ball'. She is alive and kicking and can't wait to have you for a cup of tea on the verandah (mind you if it's after 5pm it just might be a Shandy or two).
She will never leave this spot, it's too good to leave here, and everyone knows where to find her and come home too so easily, and everything is such an easy drive too – nothings far, but you get to live amongst farmers and look out at cows and hay bales and the river.
The big town of Kempsey is now, with these motor cars, just 10minutes away, the local village's of Smithtown and Gladstone are just a few minutes away and the glorious beaches of South West Rocks, Hat Head and Crescent Head are all give or take 20minutes away (yes, there's no more packed lunches or water cans or ice bricks needed to take).
And when they brought that big new Freeway in a few years back Costonville was blessed that the access is just up the road at Frederickton, about 3km away, so now her flock can come and go so easily, it's so quick for them to come see her and for them to get back to their home. You can get to that big city of Port Macquarie in a 35minute jiffy, it's unbelievable these days, so quick, so easy.
